The Rays continued their Chicago week with a last outing against the White Sox. So far it had been a split series of One-Run victories, so the rays clearly hoped that this would be a game that they could break open wide. They leaned on Ian Seymour for pitching tasks, while Shane Smith was on the hill for the White Sox.
Chandler Simpson kicked things off for the rays with a single in the first and then stole second with two. This was his 40th stolen basis of the season. The rays could not convert the run.
In half of the house, Chase Meidroth hit a single to start the inning, then Curtis Mead immediately doubled behind him. Fun fact: there are no fewer than three players in the White SOX selection with the initials “CM” Colson Montgomery hit a single with one to score two points. I don’t know what the statistics are about players who all score with the same initials, but it must be quite rare. The SOX should settle for the two runs, but given the narrow leads that won the last two games, every run counts.
Jake Mangum hit a single to lead the second and then stole second. Three followed, leaving the rays scourlessly behind. Seymour came in a better groove in the second and got the white SOx in order.
In the third, Simpson was again the only baserunner of the Rays, and again, the team did not succeed in bringing him home. In half of the house, Chase Meidroth took a leadoff walk, but three followed to leave him stranded.
The rays went 1-2-3 in the top of the fourth. On the way to half of the home, Miguel Vargas attracted a lead -off Walk. With one from the Vargas stable second. Despite his efforts, two followed to leave him stranded.
In the fifth, the rays went three-up, three-down, which is not a great strategy if the goal is to score runs, but maybe they know something that I don’t know. Chase girl got a one-out single in half of the home, but was soon eliminated by a doubles of the bat from Curtis Mead.
Chandler Simpson continued his one-man domination of the SOX with a lead-off single in the sixth. Brandon Lowe then ran. Unfortunately, Junior Caminero hit in a doubles, after which Tyler Gilbert came in to replace Shane Smith for pitching. He collected the final from the inning. In the home base, half of Edgar Quero was a single to start things, and with one in the inning the day of Seymour was done. His last rule was 5.1 IP, 5 hours, 3 R, 3 er, 2 BB, 5 K on 90 throws. A rough start that became smoother when he continued. Eric Orze replaced him and hit Miguel Vargas with a pitch. Michael A. Taylor then hit a single to score quero, and it was a bit of a bummer single because it seemed as if Chandler Simpson would catch it, but he missed the catch just before he bumped into the wall. Taylor stole second and then Brooks Baldwin ran. A squeezing Kyle Teel crashed to get two more points in front of the SOX. With two out, Meidroth ran, but the rays could finally secure the final from the inning. Yet the White Sox was 5-0 at the end of the sixth.
In the seventh Bob Seymour got a one-out single and then went to second place at a wild pitch. Unfortunately, two followed, and again the rays could not score a runner in score position. Joey Gerber stood up for the Rays in The Home Half, his Rays debut, and he got three outs in a row.
Old friend Tyler Alexander came to the top of the eighth to face his old club. With one out, Chandler Simpson and Brandon Lowe Back-to-Back Singles, after which a Junior Caminero Groundout finally got the rays their first run, and Simpson Finally I have to come home after a hit.
Christopher Morel took a walk, but the rays should ultimately settle for only one point, despite a stubborn battle by Mangum. The SOX went 1-2-3 in half the home.
The rays were due to their last efforts in the top of the ninth and the recording of Jordan Lasure. The rays went out to lose the split series to the White Sox, but not yet ready to leave Chicago.
Final: White Sox 5, Ray 1
