Championship weekend staff picks: Are the Patriots destined for Super Bowl LX?

Championship weekend staff picks: Are the Patriots destined for Super Bowl LX?

4 minutes, 6 seconds Read

Conference Championship weekend is here and the Eagles aren’t participating because their offense couldn’t function enough to survive the Wild Card, and now everyone is mad at them.

They’re now looking for a new OC, while Nick Sirianni and Jalen Hurts are both under constant and heavy criticism, and it looks like AJ Brown is on his way out of Philadelphia…It’s a mess.

But hey, at least there’s still some stress-free and pretty good playoff football to watch, and making predictions is fun even if the Eagles aren’t involved.

So here are some staff picks for Sunday’s AFC and NFC Championship Games (Note: Jimmy will publish his predictions in a separate article on Sunday morning)…

AFC Championship: Patriots (2) at Broncos (1)

3:00 PM on CBS | Empower Field at Mile High (Denver, CO) | Spread: NO -5.5

Geoff Mosher: Maybe I’m crazy, but I think with Denver’s defense and Sean Payton’s ability to make life easy for his quarterback, the Broncos can win this game without Bo Nix.

Drake Maye and the Patriots have been impressive in their two postseason wins against two very good defenses (Chargers, Texans), but they have also turned the ball over five times. Additionally, Denver’s elevation adjustment is always a factor. I can’t completely implode Denver’s offense, which isn’t a strength anyway, although the Patriots defense has also played very well this postseason.

I would definitely take Denver with the 5.5 points. In fact, I’m still rooting for the Broncos. Broncos win 23-20.

Evan Macy: Jarrett Stidham is not Nick Foles. There’s not much analysis to offer here: the Patriots will play the Rams or the Seahawks again in the Super Bowl. How can we keep letting this happen? Patriots win, 31-17.

Nick Tricome: Okay, so I had Denver making the Super Bowl heading into the playoffs, and that prediction looked pretty good… until word came through that Bo Nix broke his ankle after the Broncos defeated the Bills in the divisional round.

That’s cruel, and now the Broncos are leaning on backup QB Jarrett Stidham against a very, very good Patriots squad that, ironically, is just looking more and more like this year’s team of destiny.

ButI’m sticking to my guns and sticking with Denver. I like their defense better, I like their offense just about enough overall, I like their home field advantage at Mile High, and I like Nick Foles’ words of encouragement (because he knows these situations better than anyone). Broncos win 20-17.

NFC Championship: Rams (5) at Seahawks (1)

6:30 PM on FOX | Lumen Field (Seattle, WA) | Distribution: SEA -2.5

Geoff: The Rams have been my Super Bowl pick since the postseason began, but it’s tough to compete against the Seahawks at home given how well they’re playing.

Losing RB Zach Charbonnet will hurt some – especially at blitz pick-up – and if they play their left tackle to pieces it could cause problems for Seattle, and there’s always the possibility that Matthew Stafford, who has been playing a notch below MVP level in recent weeks, just goes crazy, which would be very impressive against this Seahawks defense.

I’m going against my better senses here and sticking with the team I initially picked. I had Rams-Broncos in the Super Bowl and I’m sticking with it. Rams win, 26-20.

Eva: Before the postseason started, I was on the Rams bandwagon. I even predicted they would beat the Eagles in the NFC Championship when we made our overall picks a few weeks ago. But the Rams have looked vulnerable twice. Against the Panthers and against the Bears, LA looked lacking and like they might be over-coached, despite all the regular love for Sean McVay.

Seattle, meanwhile, was dominant in their only playoff game, dismantling the Niners. They’re ranked No. 1 for a reason, and they’ll be playing the NFC title game at home. This one will be closer than the AFC tilt, with the Seahawks having the upper hand. Seahawks win 27-24.

Nick: After that wire-to-wire drubbing of the Niners, I don’t think Seattle is stopping for anyone. Their defense is vicious, their run game with Kenneth Walker is heartbreaking, and Sam Darnold under center looks good enough and ready enough to take the Seahawks to the Super Bowl Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp to throw to.

LA has been good this year, but I think Seattle just proved they are a clear step above everyone else and will run right through the Rams. Seahawks win 30-17.
