Champions League Draw – who could be the 8 opponents of Newcastle and how does it work?

The 2025 Champions League -similar game takes place tonight, starting at 5 pm while we finally learn who Eddie How’s Mags will be confronted in our upcoming competition phase matches.

A restructuring of the group stage to a competition format last season means that the draw works a little differently than the last Newcastle United that participated.

So how else is it? The video below explains well:

The draw is still from four pots. Each pot consists of nine teams, which are as follows after Champions League qualifications were completed on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, so that Celtic Miss Out and Benfica qualify:

In the previous draws, one team of each pot would be drawn manually to make one group. Without groups, however, UEFA now chooses a team from Pot One (teams with the most UEFA coefficient points). Then a supercomputer randomly chooses eight other teams for that team to play against, four at home and four away. This goes off the list until all teams have eight games.

There are some conditions for the draw, such as teams that others cannot play out of their home country during the competition phase. Teams also cannot play more than two teams from the same country, for example Newcastle cannot play against Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.

Knowing that everything, what can we expect from Newcastle United in this draw?

Newcastle United is in Pot Four. We know that the men of Eddie Howe cannot play against other Premier League teams, which means that Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool are crossed to the knockout round of the list. Because it is a competitive format of all 36 teams, there is unlikely that there is another ‘group of death’ situation, such as the one in 2023.

Pot One includes the elite teams, such as defenders PSG, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, Barcelona and Real Madrid. Because of their order in the draw, it is very likely that Newcastle will encounter one of those teams. They have already walked in Ins with PSG and Dortmund in the Champions League group of 2023, with poor results with the exception of that magical 4-1 victory in St James’ Park vs PSG. Is there potential for another gigantic murder this season? With a much deeper team than the last time, Newcastle has enough options from the bank to stay longer in games than last day -day.

Given the limit for teams from the same country, it might be possible to expect to play against teams from many countries, where their domestic competitions may not be on the same way with the elite. Teams such as Galatasaray, Qarabag, FC Copenhagen and Club Brugge can appear on the list of luminaire.

This will be a test for Newcastle, because the competition format gives smaller teams the chance to go to the knockout phases if they perform well enough. Club Brugge will be a tough match, they have shown that they can play against the larger teams, beat Aston Villa One zero at home last year, and the same can be said of other teams in that category.

Fans can expect some new days, including cities with a rich football history, and it is certainly a wild ride.

The list of luminaires is placed on August 30 and shows the kick -off times of the games and whether they are at home or gone. However, the draw shows that there will certainly be points on the board for Newcastle to take advantage, possibly deserve a place in the knockout rounds.
