Orlando, FL – Marked by many historic firsts, the 2025 NCAA Tennis Individual Championships have come and gone at the USTA National Campus, as the newest NCAA National Champions have now been crowned in both singles and doubles.
Being the second year of the NCAA’s two-year pilot program in which the NCAA Individual Championships are held in the fall instead of the spring after the NCAA Team Championships, the draws were just as loaded with talent as Sunday’s championship games. We saw players with career-high ATP Singles Rankings of No. 180 and No. 385 face off, while on the women’s side, eventual champion Reese Brantmeier had a career-high WTA Singles Ranking of No. 180 and No. 385. 236 and is currently in the Top 450 in the world.
In what was an All-American singles final on the men’s side, defending NCAA Singles champion Michael Zheng of Columbia took on SMU’s Trevor Svajda, all of whom had impressed in the tournament thus far. Marking the first league-wide meeting between the two players, fans gathered at the USTA National Campus to witness this battle between two of the top emerging talents in college tennis.
After trading a number of early breaks to start the match, it was Zheng who took the lead late on, winning 6-4 in the first set, putting pressure on Svajda to respond. He responded as quickly as Zheng moved forward. Svajda was right back in the match and won the second set 6-1, forcing a third set that would decide the match.
With the crowd behind them at every point, the defending champion was the one to ultimately put the match away, winning 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 against Svajda and becoming the first man since Steve Johnson in 2011 and 2012 to repeat as the NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Champion. Zheng made even more history on Sunday, becoming the winningest men’s player in NCAA Singles Championship history. He earned his 19th NCAA Individual Championship victory in singles, breaking a tie with Virginia great Somdev Devvarman.
Two courts away, in the women’s singles final, North Carolina’s Brantmeier faced Cal’s Berta Passola Folch for the national title. For Brantmeier, she wanted to become the second North Carolina player to win the singles title, while for Passola Folch, she would be the first Cal player to win since 2011 and fourth all-time in tournament history.
Just a day after both players played in extended three-set semi-finals, neither looked slow going into the final, with both players coming out swinging to start the match. After a few close matches, Brantmeier was the one who was able to grab a break and consolidate the break by holding her serve first, leading to a 6-3 lead in the first set. After a very similar storyline in the second set, Brantmeier closed again with a 6-3 second set score to crown national champion.
This singles championship marked the second NCAA title Brantmeier has won her collegiate career in Chapel Hill, as she was also part of the 2023 NCAA Team Championship, which was also the first in North Carolina history.
In doubles, we saw the Virginia duo of Mans Dahlberg and Dylan Dietrich win Virginia’s first NCAA Men’s Doubles title since 2013, while in the women’s event, Gabriella Broadfoot and Victoria Osuigwe took home NC State’s second NCAA Women’s Doubles title in the last five years.
For Dahlberg and Dietrich, they defeated two seeded teams en route to the title, including a victory over No. 1-seeded duo of Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez of Mississippi State. In the final against Ohio State’s Brandon Carpico and Nikita Filin, Dahlberg and Dietrich won the first set in tiebreaker fashion before carrying their momentum to a 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory to claim the title.
Meanwhile, the junior and freshman duo for Broadfoot and Osuigwe posted victories over three seeded teams, including the No. 3 and No. 4 seeded teams on their way to the title. For Broadfoot, this continues her dominant doubles career as she was ITA All-American Doubles Champion with Maddy Zampardo last fall.
Next up on the college tennis calendar is the team dual match season starting in January. With the ITA Kickoff Weekend scheduled for late January and the ITA National Team Indoor Championships scheduled for February, fans will have plenty of action to enjoy throughout the spring semester before the eight men’s and women’s quarterfinalists converge on Athens, Georgia for the 2026 NCAA Team Championships.
