Elite talent, depth and experience have been the cornerstones of the Boston Celtics’ success under head coach Joe Mazulla. However, with a catastrophic end to the 2025 playoffs, compounded by an injury to superstar Jayson Tatum and major roster moves throughout the offseason, the Philadelphia 76ers have a significant opportunity to record an early victory over their Eastern Conference rivals.
The Celtics have seen a number of big departures in recent months as a talented core of players including Al Horford, Kristaps Porzingis, Jrue Holiday and Luke Kornet have all joined other franchises and brought with them a wealth of experience and knowledge.
Even though a clip pops up X With recent weeks showing that Tatum has returned to light on-court action – including attempts at standing dunks – it would be unrealistic to suggest the 27-year-old will return to competitive action in the near future given the extent of his torn right Achilles tendon.

76ers should take advantage of the Celtics’ new roster
No franchise should be judged by the first ten games of a new campaign, especially one undergoing a major personnel overhaul. As things stand now, Payton Pritchard will be partnered with Derrick White from the start and adapt to a role where he doesn’t do damage off the bench.
Likewise, the 76ers also have a fresh face potentially filling a starting guard position in the ultra-athletic VJ Edgecombe. Though, on the other hand, the Sixers have a sense of continuity with their roster – even if it has yet to produce a win – as Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Paul George enter their second year as Philadelphia’s ‘Big Three’.
There can be no debate that this experiment was a major failure during the 2024-2025 campaign, with a variety of injuries and issues keeping this talented trio from taking the field for any length of time. Nevertheless, they spent a year analyzing each other’s qualities, while also building relationships off the field.
Paul George is not expected to be present on opening night. Still, after an impressive preseason performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Embiid has shown that his devastating on-court talents haven’t disappeared during his lengthy injury layoff, registering 14 points, seven rebounds and eight assists during his 18-minute cameo.
Additionally, Maxey and the wealth of backcourt options the Sixers now have at their disposal showcased the versatility and dynamism they possess during the 110-126 victory over the Timberwolves.
There is never a perfect time to play a franchise as historic as the Boston Celtic; Although Jayson Tatum is reluctantly on the injury table and their new roster suffers from inevitable growing pains, one has to assume that a major opportunity has presented itself for the Philadelphia 76ers.
