Derrick White is usually one of the chattest players in the dressing room of Celtics – who regularly pokes fun in his teammates, tells stories and is flooded with energy.
But when the 31-year-old Star Guard speaks with reporters, he often picks his words carefully and seems more reserved. As such, he has developed a reputation in Boston as a fairly calm and shy man.
That could change soon, because fans will get a more unfiltered view of White through his new podcast, the White Noise Podcast with Derrick WhiteHe launches with his old best friend, Alex Welsh.
And Welsh believes that the project fans will give new insight into the personality of their favorite player, and notes how professional athletes should remember what they should say and what they should not say when performing their media availability in the season.
“He is very much a joker,” Welsh told Celtics blog. “He always has good energy, [he’s] Always try to be funny, he is Funny, he is a very airy guy. “
How the new podcast of Derrick White originated
The duo left the first episode on Monday, months after a common friend of those who worked at the media company, Alex Welsh approached with the idea.
“I was so unhealthy about it,” Welsh said. But the friend, who knew White from his match days with the San Antonio Spurs, put my hand out and repeated that he thought it was completely logical.
When Welsh spent the concept on white, he was surprised by his reaction.
“He was a lot of More interested in it than I thought he would be, “Welsh remembered.” And we just went for it. ‘
The fact that the idea came from someone they both knew and trusted created a first level of buy-in that would have been difficult to replicate: “If a large company or whatever tried to finance, I don’t think he would be so receptive, but because it was someone in the neighborhood, it worked.”
Over the years, White had appeared several times as a guest on podcasts, also on the old man of JJ Reddick and the three, and those performances were something he enjoyed to enjoy.
“When I brought it to him, I thought:” I never really asked you – do you like to do podcasts? “Welsh said.” And he said, “Yes, it’s actually fun. I enjoy it. I think it would be very nice to have our own and talk about the things I want to talk about, versus being interviewed by someone I am not super close.”
As the best friend of Derrick White, Alex Welsh was the co-host without Brainer
White and Welsh were college housemates and teammates at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs, where White started his college basketball career.
Since then they are best friends; Their children are close by, their parents are close by, and while Welsh still lives in Colorado with his wife and child, he often visits white in Boston.
“We bring the children together a lot. I spent a lot of time in the ‘White House’, as we call it, and go [Celtics] Games, “he said.” So we will just sprinkle a little podcast recording in our usual journeys. “
The fact that White and Welsh go far back should help the Celtics star open and tell the funny stories that he has been on over the years, Welsh said. Now, instead of giving a soundbite of ten seconds surrounded by reporters, White can spend 15 minutes on a story that he previously only pointed out.
“People only know the surface level of him,” Welsh said. “And that was a lot about what we were talking about is really funny, and he is extravert and he is a good storyteller. He is just a very light-hearted person. And I think the Celtics community that supports him and knows that to a certain extent, but they don’t know the real him completely.”
Welsh was also a serious basketball player and the two have many stories from their match days. After four years of basketball at UCCS, Welsh played abroad in Brazil, Poland and Switzerland. Nowadays he works in technological sales and has an external job that gives him the flexibility to lead this project.
And because of all this, Welsh closely followed the route of White’s exploding career. Are Twitter feed are usually retweets that emphasize the impact of White on the field. And he is not at all surprised how the NBA career of his best friend has folded.
“How put words into words?” Said Welsh. “I look at him like a brother. So it’s strange for me to say, I’m proud of him, but I think I’m super Proud of everything he has been able to achieve. ‘
The future of the White Noise Podcast with Derrick White
Many NBA players have podcasts, including Drayond Green, Michael Porter Junior, Paul George, Trae Young, LeBron James, CJ McCollum, Tyrese Maxey, Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart, among others.
Welsh said that the two do not know exactly where this project is going – episodes outside season are easier to manage their logistics and everything can be changed during the NBA season.
But so far things have come for granted. Episode one Has already built up more than 10,000 views and has White who discussed the movements of the Celtics in detail outside season, including traded to Boston, and critical moments from his university career.
“We are now working on episode two – it has been great,” Welsh said. ‘Many of them are just things we are [talking about] Around the dining table, but we didn’t have any recording. It clicked a bit for us – we should record these conversations and make other people laugh as loudly as we do. ”
Welsh repeated that the podcast does not stand in the way of the primary focus of White: Celtics Basketball.
“We want it to be something, but we also want to give priority to the season,” Welsh said. “If it ever becomes counter -intuitive for the success of him and the Celtics, it is not something that we will hold for a dear life.”
So whether the podcast will be a big hit and something that the two are working consistently is still to be seen. They are not going to force the problem.
“I want to be able to say,” Hey, we’re going to tear it, “said Welsh.” We want to be like the Kelce Brothers, such as old man and the three, all smoke ” – of course, we study them, we look all those guys, but only time will tell as soon as the season starts and life changes a bit.”
But one thing is certain: the White Noise Podcast gives Celtics fans who have long loved Derrick White of the chance to get to know him much better.
Welsh is also enthusiastic about that.
“He is not a glitter and Glamor man who flies around in his own plane,” said Welsh. “He is fundamentally, to the core, the same person he was when we were 18, who came up on campus … He just has a few dollars in his pocket.”
