Celibacy creates a ‘cascade of changes’ that can benefit the mind and body

Maybe you’ve been thinking about giving up sex for a while, or maybe circumstances dictate the decision.

Or maybe life just gets in the way.

Whatever the case, it’s common for people to experience dry spells, some longer than others.

While it may seem like a bad thing to not have sex, especially if it is for an extended period of time, the effects on your mind and body may surprise you.

“A year without sex creates a cascade of changes that are not limited to missing physical intimacy,” says Anita Fletcher, sex and relationship expert at adult toy brand. Fantasy Co.told the Toronto Sun.

“Your body doesn’t just ‘forget’ sex, but instead adapts in ways that can be both empowering and challenging.”

Fletcher said the hormonal changes during a year-long dry spell are more complex than people realize because testosterone levels can fluctuate in unexpected ways across genders.

“Initially, some people experience a dip in testosterone, which can lower libido even further,” Fletcher said, noting that the interesting part is that after several months “some people see their levels stabilize or even increase as their bodies adjust to the new normal.”

That said, the absence of regular oxytocin release can cause noticeable effects, with many people often feeling less emotionally connected not just to potential partners, but to everyone in their lives.
