Today we celebrate 20 years of WordPress.com! We wanted to put the power of publishing in everyone’s hands, and since then millions of you have used it to build great things.
Our beginning and our purpose
On June 20, 2005, Matt Mullenweg, co-founder of the WordPress project, was hired Donncha Ó Caoimh (a software developer and WordPress contributor) and Automatic was born. Their mission: to create a hosted version of WordPress that anyone can use.
After beta testing in August 2005, WordPress.com was publicly launched on November 21, 2005. This is what the homepage looked like:
We’ve come a long way since these humble beginnings, but our purpose hasn’t changed much: to democratize publishing and e-commerce.
