The Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly open to LeBron James returning to the franchise for the final chapter of his career. NBA insider Evan Sidery tweeted on Wednesday, Jan. 28, citing Dave McMenamin, that talks with the Lakers have been minimal as Los Angeles transitions into the Luka Doncic era.

James, 41, is in the final season of a two-year, $101 million contract after exercising his player option last summer. He is averaging 22.4 points, six rebounds and 6.7 assists in 33.4 minutes per game over 28 games this season for the Lakers.

Los Angeles is currently 28-17, with Doncic leading the team with 33.8 points and 8.8 assists per game, supported by Austin Reaves, who adds 26.6 points per outing. The Lakers’ rebuild around Doncic suggests James’ long-term future in Los Angeles is uncertain.

Cleveland, which sits fifth in the Eastern Conference at 28-20, would welcome James alongside Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley. Mitchell is averaging 29.5 points per game, while Mobley is contributing 17.9 points and 8.8 rebounds. Darius Garland adds 18 points and nearly seven assists per game.

The Cavaliers face significant salary caps for the 2026-2027 season. The roster includes $239.3 million in active payroll with a negative cap and an estimated luxury tax bill of more than $140 million. Highly paid core players include Mitchell and Mobley, each with a cap hit of $50.1 million, and Garland at $42.2 million.

Adding James would require creative financial maneuvering. Possible options include using cap limits, luxury tax exemptions, and structuring a short-term, incentive-laden contract.

LeBron’s return would mark a historic homecoming, as he began his career with Cleveland and led the team to the 2016 NBA Championship.

The Cavaliers’ openness does not guarantee a reunion, and James has yet to comment on his plans. As the summer approaches, all eyes will be on potential negotiations, with the league keeping a close eye on the intersection of star power and financial strategy.
