Vancouver Canucks GM Jim Rutherford is working on it again and proves that sometimes it is best to say nothing. In what seems to be an attempt to correct a course or to walk back part of the earlier confusion about his comments that Quinn Hughes might want to play with his brothers and that can be a problem for the Canucks, Rutherford walked again in the Mediaperpers of the Canucks.
He took the time to talk about the long -term future of the star defender with the franchise. Speaking with reporters, Rutherford acknowledged the importance of Hughes for both the team and the city, but emphasized that no decision has to be made.
“It is clear that the future of Quinn is so important for this franchise and this city. At the end of the day he does not have to make a decision. Sometimes you think one thing a month in life, and another thing for another month,” said Rutherford. He added that the organization “stays in between” when it comes to the balance between the potential of improving the schedule now versus risking future assets in a trade or extensions scenario.
Rutherford was also about comments he made last year about Hughes who wanted to play next to his brothers. “I don’t think I told someone something they didn’t know yet. I mean, come on. This was no surprise,” he said. The assumption here is that Rutherford was irritated that the media made his comments to be more than just a mild comment.
Would the Canucks Quinn Hughes actually exchange?
Canucks assistant GM Patrik Allvin Chimde and noted that the club remains active in his search for middle depth. “We are open to business,” he said, what the willingness of the team to explore options indicates, while still respecting the timeline of Hughes.
Rutherford concluded by emphasizing that the ultimate decision is at Hughes himself. “You can play this thing in 100 different ways, but there is only one man who will make that decision,” he said. “But we have a responsibility, Quinn Hughes or not, to put the best team on the ice we can.”
For now, Vancouver is confronted with a difficult decision and the organization does not hide that fact. Whether this is something that fans actually want to hear can still be seen. Sometimes transparent is not the best way to act.
