Proven Pacer Catch a Wave (CaptainTreacherous) showed a welcome return when he took the victory in the last Stride victory in the IRT Free for All at Melton on Saturday evening.
Catch A Wave has had a lean run lately and his last victory was free in Gloucester Park in Gloucester Park in April this year. He did not perform so well when he went for the Inter Dominion in Albion Park in July. He was refreshed after his journey from Queensland, but was not tempting against the highly valued Eureka Candidates Bay of Biscay and Fighter Command.
From the second line, Kate left the brown gelding back in the field on Catch a Wave.
Keyang Tokyo, who was well supported, was taken to the lead with Fighter Command caught outside the leader early. As soon as the field was established, Mark Pitt made his movement around the field on Bay of Biscay and then give Fighter Command the path behind him. Better isolate was tucked away behind the leader.
Keyang Tokyo raised the pace along the back straight ahead of Bay of Biscay that came closer and the command of the hunter ready to be ready to make his run. At this stage and around the last corner, a wave was still a clear last one, but he finished wide.

Bay of Biscay made heavy weather to drag Tokyo in Keyang that broke a lot of fighting. Slowly the hunters command began to gather in the leaders, but catch a wave from wide sprouted wings and he defeated the hunters command with half a neck with Keyang Tokyo in the third for Bay of Biscay.
What made Catch A Wave’s Run more remarkable was that they run their last 400 meters in 26.5 seconds, but catching a wave that made at least twelve meters, so his last quarter should certainly be one of the fastest ever recorded in Melton.
Driver Kate Gath called out her joy to catch a Wave’s victory.
“We finally arrived in a race where they were not worried about us for once. It is so difficult if you drive in these races, they just drive to beat us home.”
“Tonight I thought we would make him cold, we know how well he can get home and it worked very well. They were not worried to beat us and it made the difference”.
“I knew that the first quarter was slow, so they went home zip. But to think that they would run 26.5 seconds in the last quarter. I don’t know what he drove, but I was still a long road on the 400 meters so it was super impressive”.
Gath indicated that Catch would be set a Golf for the group 1 Len Smith Mile in Menangle on September 6.
“He will probably not run for that. Andy may have another race in mind. He generally goes well if he has a front race in a big race. But he did not raced the way he went tonight, so he may not need that.”
Fighter Command was Dapp in the defeat and did no harm his Eureka opportunities. Eureka favorite Bay from Biscay had a hard run, although he had not shown that spark at the finish of the event despite the very fast last quarter, which can explain why he could not win.
