Manchester United midfielder Casemiro could extend his time at the club thanks to a term in his contract that would allow him to trigger an extension.
Currently, Man United are facing a serious shortage of options in midfield.
While the Brazilian is obviously at their disposal, his performances have become erratic, while his age dictates that he can continue in the not-too-distant future.
But even as transfer rumors continue to swirl around the 33-year-old, he could manage to secure another season at Old Trafford thanks to a special condition written into his contract.
Transfer links
Although the Brazilian has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia in the past, he appears to be strongly linked with a move to the United States, with MLS clubs such as LA Galaxy expressing their interest in the midfielder.
His home country of Brazil has recently been revealed as a potential destination, with Palmeiras reportedly contacting the player’s representatives to inquire about his professional future.
However, the Brazilian could find a way to stay at United beyond next summer.
Casemiro’s lifeline
“Casemiro can activate his extra year at Manchester United by starting a certain number of games this season,” says Laurie Whitwell The Athletics reported today.
“The 33-year-old would see his contract automatically extended until 2027, at his current salary, if he meets the target, believed to be 35 starts in all competitions.”
However, the report acknowledges that the experienced midfielder is highly unlikely to achieve this target.
Given United’s early exit from the FA Cup and League Cup, the team only has 40 games left to play this season.
After starting 18 games so far, he should start all of United’s remaining 17 games until the end of the season.
While this is possible, it is unlikely, which may come as a relief to fans who want the team to offload the player given his high pay package and turbulent on-field performance.
