Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville warned Democrats against viewing newly elected New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s victory as a bellwether for the country during a new podcast appearance.
While the Democratic Party is in flux following then-Vice President Kamala Harris’ defeat to President Donald Trump, recent victories by both moderate and progressive candidates have provided mixed messages about the party’s path to victory going forward. During a performance op The Daily Beast Podcast Published Monday, Carville was asked by host Joanna Coles about the future of the Democratic Party.
“So let’s unpack a little here,” he said. “The mayor of New York has never been a figure in national politics. I repeat: the mayor of New York, who has never been a major figure in national politics.”
Carville, who has criticized Mamdani in the past, cited several major changes taking place in politics, mocking that many people’s view is instead: “But we have to talk about Mamdani because New York is the center of the universe, and there is nothing else in the United States but New York.”

He continued: “In fact, the city of New York is not a… it’s a big player in the financial industry. It’s a big player in theater, it’s a big player in advertising, it’s a big player in creativity. It’s one of my favorite cities in the whole world. In fact, I’m going there tomorrow, I can’t wait. But you’re not the center of the political universe. You just aren’t. You’re not even a swing place. If it weren’t, for your money, politicians wouldn’t care about you a lot.”
“I infer that you are saying the future of the Democratic Party will be moderate?” Cole asked.
Carville argued that the Democratic Party doesn’t really have a message right now, but rather an argument that Republicans need to be stopped.
“The only way you can get a message across is that Democratic voters are going to choose their presidential candidate,” he said.

“What we do know for sure is that in this century — now I may be 72, but maybe not even then — the Democrats have never chosen the most left-wing candidate. Ever,” Carville said, scoffing at the idea that Mamdani represents where Democrats are politically across the country. “Right now that’s getting in the way of the storyline, right? Because New York has to be at the center of the story, right?”
When Cole continued to share data on turnout for Mamdani, arguing that the election of a democratic socialist was important, Carville responded, “That’s great, that’s great, it’s New York City. It’s nothing else.’ He added, “I’m telling you that you are not the center of the political universe in the United States.”
“Well, that’s very disappointing to me,” the host joked. “This is a brutal Monday morning.”
