Carrick talks Tottenham memories ahead of the reunion

Michael Carrick has said he has ‘very fond memories’ of his time at Tottenham ahead of this weekend’s clash with his former club.

Manchester United host Tottenham in the Premier League tomorrow, with interim coach Carrick taking on his old side at Old Trafford.

Carrick spent two seasons with the North Londoners during his playing career before moving to Manchester United in 2006 for £18.6 million.

Asked about his time at Spurs and that transfer, Carrick said in his pre-match press conference: “It was quite immediate. I have very fond memories of Tottenham. I was there for what feels like a short time but I really enjoyed it. Good team, Martin Jol was manager, a lot of things I learned in a short time at the club.”

“Coming here was a big leap and I felt that quite quickly. Once you step in here as a footballer, you change. From the first day you walked into the dressing room and met the manager, that was me.”

Tottenham have had a challenging Premier League season and are currently fourteenth in the table. Thomas Frank has faced pressure in his debut season, although a positive Champions League season has seen Spurs rise to the last 16.

Asked what he expects from Spurs, Carrick added: “They certainly bring a challenge. The way they finished the game recently, over time they have had players injured and a lot of changes in the team which makes things more difficult.”

“They’re bringing players back, they’ve got really good attackers who want to stretch the backline and play forward and attack the penalty area very often. A slightly different game to what we’ve played in recent weeks, but we’re looking forward to it. We’re in a good place, the boys have worked well again this week. With our feet on the ground, we won’t get carried away. It’s about what’s next. Big challenge ahead.”
