Carlos Prates spoke about Ian Machado Garry’s victory in Qatar over Belal Muhammad, calling it impressive but not exactly a celebration for the fans.
Prates believes fans want to see him fight newly minted welterweight champion Islam Makhachev. Makhachev last dethroned Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 322. On the same night, Prates also dethroned knockout former champion Leon Edwards. ‘The Nightmare’, which is currently the number six in the rankings 170-pounder, is now on a two-fight win streak, with both wins coming via knockout.
He recently appeared in an interview with Ariel Helwani and talked about his former opponent Ian Machado Garry’s UFC Qatar performance.
‘The Nightmare’ told Helwani:
Ian Garry did very well, but won again by decision. People don’t like that. People don’t pay tickets for that, but it is what it is.”

Carlos Prates is calling for a title shot ahead of other contenders
During the same interview with Ariel Helwani, Carlos Prates admitted that it is a tough choice for the matchmakers to decide on the next 170-pound title challenger as Shavkat Rakhmonov has been out of action for too long, Garry has lost to Rakhmonov and Prates has lost to ‘The Future’.
Prates analyzed the UFC welterweight title picture and added why he should be Makhachev’s next opponent:
“If we think about who deserves it, it’s hard. Shavkat goes so long without a fight. And I can’t fight for the title because I lost to Ian Garry, but Ian Garry doesn’t deserve to fight for the title either because he lost to Shavkat but won against Belal Muhammad and me… I’m not a matchmaker for UFC, but if I was, I would choose Carlos Prates because he knocks out people and people like him.”
