Carlos Alcaraz found the biggest challenge with which he would be confronted in the early stages of US Open of this year, the 145 MPH portions of his 6ft 11 in the first round opponent, Reilly Opelka. Instead, it turned out to be his own brother.
Alcaraz wanted a haircut for the tournament and early in the absence of his usual hairdresser, Victor Martínez, one of his brothers to give him a trim. It didn’t go well.
“I felt that my hair had been a long time, and before the tournament I just really wanted to get a haircut,” said the world no. 2 reporters after rejecting Opelka 6-4, 7-5 6-4 on Monday evening. “Suddenly just my brother just – he didn’t understand the machine wrong. He just cut it. The only way to repair it was just to shave it. To be honest, it’s not so bad, I think.”
Alcaraz flew Martínez to other tournaments, such as the French open this year, when he needs a haircut, but thought that the flight from Spain to New York was too far. Until now, the judgment about the hairdressing skills of his brother has been mixed.
“Some people like it, some people don’t like it,” he said. “To be honest, I just laugh at the reaction of the people. It is what it is. I can’t do anything else now, so I just laugh at everything they say about my hairstyle.”
A person who is not a fan is Frances Tiafoe. The couple could meet each other in the semi -final after they won their first round races. Tiafoe described the new cut of Alcaraz as ‘terrible’ when asked for it.

“I don’t know who told him to do that, but it’s terrible. From a man who gets out week out, who is proud of good hairstyles, it’s terrible,” Tiafoe said. “But at the end of the day it is Carlos, and that’s my husband. But yes, he has to go with me. He should definitely be with me.”
Alcaraz had his own thoughts. “Frances lies. Frances is lying,” laughed Alcaraz. “No, come on? He showed up here and say it’s terrible? I know he is lying. I know he loves the hairstyle. He likes it. He told me.”
However, there were fans of the new look of the Spaniard. Masters champion Rory Mcilroy met Alcaraz on Monday at Flushing Meadows and gave his opinion. “I like it,” he said. “It’s good. It’s a good look.”
Alcaraz, whose five Grand Slam titles include the 2022 US Open, the following plays on Thursday, against World No 65 Mattia Bellucci. He said his hair grows so fast that by that time it might not be a talk point.
“Every time I get a haircut, it’s over two or three days away,” he said. ‘In three days you will see another hair[style]. “
