A week after the appointment, Chinelle Henry insists her new role as West Indies vice-captain ‘hasn’t really changed much’. However, the all-rounder would like to approach the new chapter as Hayley Matthews’ replacement with an embracing mentality.

“The preparation was the same, [and] I will still play the game the same way,” Henry began.[The title] doesn’t change who I am as a person or player. It’s about taking more responsibility.”

Henry’s ever-increasing status has previously coincided with her continued growth as a batsman over the past four years, as she was previously used primarily as an all-round bowler. Her rise has been noticed worldwide and accentuated by performances in the Indian Women’s Premier League and the Australian Women’s Big Bash over the past two seasons.

Henry led the Barbados Royals to the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) title in 2025, replacing an injured Matthews. The 30-year-old admits that her time abroad has not only played a big role in her progress, but also given her a new perspective. “Franchise cricket has obviously helped a lot [my] development,” Henry began.

“I understand why players who have played in franchise cricket have done so well in their respective international teams. It’s about playing with different people and different cultures and learning new things along the way. And of course you learn about other players that you face internationally.”

Now that he has an official title, Henry plans to empower the Windies youth by relying on their talent. “I’m pretty sure they’ll be very, very happy [part of the international setup]”, said the Jamaican.

“It’s just about trying to help them settle in as best we can and help them feel welcome and confident, knowing that [their potential] is the reason they are here.”
