The experienced all-rounder believes that communication and planning have laid the platform for a successful World Cup
When data analysts go to a player auction, they know for sure which areas need to be filled. Once they have selected who they consider suitable players, guidelines are provided, informing each of their roles for the upcoming season. Role Clarity: It’s all the rage in T20 cricket these days. And it’s exactly what West Indian all-rounder Jason Holder believes will push them deep into the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup.
West Indies were far from perfect despite a 35-run win over Scotland in their opening match in Kolkata, India, on Saturday. But winning on a less than perfect day is a victory according to Holder, who is alert to the importance of peaking in a tournament. “We all know we can continue to get better in every department,” he said.
An improvement that depends on this team having multiple I’s – on individual brilliance in different phases and disciplines. “I think role clarity and role execution are very important for us.” Holder said.
It’s a sentiment that has long been emphasized by Head Coach Daren Sammy and supported by skipper Shai Hope. The Windies captain has expressed his delight at the early success of Shimron Hetmyer’s promotion to get the team off to a “fast start”.
However, Hetmyer is not the only man on a mission. Holder went on to provide details: “Everyone knows what is required of them. And that’s what we have to do to create a strong collective effort. So I think the challenge for each individual is to carry out their role and collectively bring it together for the team.”
The former Test and One Day International captain has been performing at international level for over a decade and created history on Saturday after his 3 for 30 saw him become the first West Indian to claim 100 wickets across all three formats.
Although he is “very happy” with the personal milestone, Holder emphasizes: “We definitely have to go one step further on the field. We let ourselves down and missed a few opportunities. So that’s clearly an area where we can improve. But all in all, I’m very happy with how we started. It’s just very important to continue to build.”
West Indies next face England in Wankhede on Wednesday morning (9:30 ECT/8:30 YES).
