Carey Price has officially continued from the Montreal Canadiens, but not without a final act of generosity for the franchise that he defined for almost two decades. Before trading to the San Jose Sharks this weekend, Price was rejection of his clause without movement, a decision with which Montreal could complete the deal and manage their selection and cap-situation more efficiently.
Price did not have to do this. With a complete no-move in his contract and a desire to only play for the Canadiens, some would claim that it is on the schedule of Sharks, even if he never touches the ice, could affect that inheritance. Price said months ago that he would not stand in the way if it helped the Canadiens. He was in his word when the request to be traded on a reconstruction of Sharks team came his way. He knows that he will never play a game for the sharks, and one day he will be honored by the Habs. Yet things are a bit different now.
Price did well because of the Canadiens
Price’s dedication to the team that he helped raise is commendable. For 18 seasons with the Canadiens, Price became more than a goalkeeper -he was the face of the franchise, a Vezina Trophy winner and a Conn Smythe finalist. His leadership, even as a non-player on LTIR, must be appreciated. It was the last gesture he could make on his way out and he put the organization first.
Although Price becomes a member of the sharks, the Canadiens can use the money that has been released by his trade and have about $ 20 million to spend on the deadline. That is a lot of improvement that the team can make if they try to make a run in the NHL play -offs.
He could have said no, and the Canadiens would have found another way to become CAP-compliant. Price agreed to make things a lot less complicated.
