Cardiff City boss Brian Barry-Murphy is reportedly on Wolves’ radar if they opt to sack Rob Edwards, according to TEAMtalk.
Cardiff City were left devastated after bowing out of the Championship earlier this year. Having only played Premier League football in 2019, the Bluebirds still harbor ambitions of returning to the top flight in the future.
For the time being, the focus is strongly on reconstruction. A key part of that process has been the development of young talent, with their progress guided by a highly regarded head coach and former Manchester City academy figure. Brian Barry Murphy.
However, Barry-Murphy’s success is starting to generate interest in him from the above leagues. According to TEAMtalkPremier League Wolves have the Cardiff City boss on their radar ahead of his possible sacking Rob Edwards.
Edwards has only been in office for seven games but is yet to pick up a point while Wolves sit bottom of the league with two points. His departure from Middlesbrough was particularly controversialand it has not yet borne fruit.
Barry-Murphy is joined by Gary O’Neil and Hearts boss Derek McIness on Wolves’ shortlist. The Cardiff City boss was also linked with Middlesbrough after Edwards left them.
No shock that Barry-Murphy is attracting interest after starting for Cardiff City
Barry-Murphy has brought his possession-based philosophy to Cardiff City and has achieved encouraging results. The approach first took shape during his time at financially strapped Rochdale and was later refined during his work in Manchester City’s youth academy.
His form at Cardiff City was excellent, but it was a Carabao Cup tie against Chelsea that caught the eye. When lower league teams face elite opposition, a more cautious game plan is often adopted, but that wasn’t the case for the Bluebirds.
Instead, Cardiff backed themselves in possession, recording a solid 46.2% of the ball against an Enzo Maresca side also built around control. They made good use of wide areas with eighteen crosses, while their off-the-ball organization limited Chelsea’s effectiveness.
This style is something that Cardiff City supporters are becoming accustomed to, but it was still unexpected against such opposition. Despite the defeat, they left with great pride as the team continues to grow in cohesion and confidence.

Edwards’ dismissal should deter Barry-Murphy from the Wolves move
Whether anything comes from this link remains to be seen on all fronts. However, if Wolves choose to sack Edwards, it should deter Barry-Murphy and coaches like him.
Wolves are a sinking ship with problems both on and off the field. Both they and Cardiff City are likely to play in the same division next season.
Especially in the case of Barry-Murphy, he will absolutely have other options higher up the pyramid. Some patience on his part will pay off, especially if he takes the Bluebirds back to the Championship this season.
