What appears pristine on the showroom floor – or even on online marketplaces – may, on closer inspection, be littered with shoddy craftsmanship and dangerous shortcuts.
In the confrontational images, a technician meticulously dismantles the side of a Crusader caravan, initially due to insurance damage.
What he discovers is nothing short of astonishing.
“Alright guys, look at this. We’re currently tearing apart the side of this Crusader due to insurance damage and… look how easily the easing comes off,” he explains as he effortlessly peels parts away.
The shock increases when he reveals a critical error: “We just started at the bottom here, no silicon at all on the bottom mold.”

Have you ever wondered why your moldings don’t stick properly? Maybe it’s because the plastic inside hasn’t been removed, allowing it to stick to the caravan’s bodywork. Source: Affordable caravans – Service and repairs
Further inspection revealed that even the roof seal had no sealant in it and the caravan’s brand new molding had not been properly secured as the protective plastic had not been removed.
“They didn’t take the plastic off the back… that’s why it didn’t stick to the frame at all,” he says, highlighting a basic but crucial assembly error.
The caravan was also found to have no insulation and showed minor water damage, directly attributable to poor installation of the moldings and cladding.
Industry beware: warning from ACCC
With more than 900,000 registered caravans and campers currently plying Australian roads, industry insiders areraise the alarm about what they describe as persistent bad consumer practices and insufficient product testing, despite the rapid growth of the market.
According to an article from Yahoo News, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) issued a stern warning in 2022, putting the caravan industry ‘on notice of the poor treatment of consumers’.
The ACCC cited pervasive problems including long wait times for deliveries and repairs, misleading advertising and false warranty claims.
Three years later, veteran manufacturer David Fealy claims little has changed.
“Caravans and campers can be approved for sale after only minimal internal quality checks and in some cases limited road testing of just 5,000 to 7,000 km,” he said. Yahoo News.
“This is despite the fact that a typical tour of Australia covers more than 17,000km, often through extreme conditions including rough roads, red dust and prolonged exposure to heat and humidity.”

Fealy warns that Australia’s harsh climate, particularly humidity in tropical and coastal areas, can quickly accelerate structural failure in poorly sealed joints, laminated panels and adhesive joints.
The ever-present salty air along coastlines only increases the risk of corrosion.
According to Yahoo News, known defects such as leaking panel joints or J-moulds can cost owners up to $10,000 to repair – a hefty sum for what should have been a factory sealed unit.
So heed the warnings before you embark on your great Australian adventure.
That shiny new caravan might be hiding a precious secret beneath its surface.
Do your homework, inspect thoroughly and demand quality – because your dream vacation shouldn’t become a roadside nightmare.
