Captain Crunch gelding tops Virginia Breeders elims

(WOODSTOCK, VA – 10/12/2025) — Four divisions of the first round of the Virginia Breeder’s Fund, the first round of pacing eliminations for freshman runners took place at Shenandoah Downs and Janet Davis’s Caviart Trenton recorded the fastest mile of the quartet, activating the timer in 1:57.0 at a colt’s pace. Tim Deaton led the winning effort that came from coast to coast – the Captain Crunch the gelding’s fourth win in eight career starts. The winner is owned by Ramona Gillespie and was best by 13 ½ lengths in the 1-9 stakes choice. Stacey McLenaghan’s B Real finished second and Adrian Wisher’s Better B In came third.

Another Caviart horse won the first colt elimination on Sunday: Tracy Bradshaw’s Caviart Sheridan. The Tall dark stranger The gelding was guided to victory by Tony Morgan in 2:01.0. The winner held the front spot all the way and held off Dan Gassien’s pesky Dapperfly by half a length at the finish. Tony Alagna’s Hungry Joey came third.

Jamie Sullivan’s Caviart Daisy took the lead from the break in the fillies elimination test, leading all the way and passing impressively in 1:57 3/5. The daughter of Dear Lou cut panels of :29 1/5, :59 4/5 and 1:29 3/5 in winning her fourth race in nine starts. Tony Morgan was in the sulky for owner Frank Chick of Harrington, Delaware. Alex Goldin’s Caviart Santa Fe was second, 3 ¼ lengths off the pace, while William Wyatt’s Freaky Dream’s finished third.

In the filly’s other elimination, Marna Shehan’s Caviart Amore Mio defeated Herman Hagerman’s More Than Better after the duo battled the entire mile one-two. The winner was ridden by Tyler Shehan, who clocked a time of 1:58.0 and was best by 2.5 lengths. Caviart Farms owns the winner. The runner-up was driven by Morgan and owned by Hagerman Racing, while Chuck Perry’s Luna Speaks finished third.

Gary Messenger’s Caviart Gemma authored a dominant wire-to-wire performance in one of Saturday’s Breeder’s Fund 2-Year-Old Trot eliminations. The Captain Corey filly crossed best by 12 1/2 lengths and crossed with Fern Paquet Jr. in 2:02 3/5. on the bike. The winner is owned by Scott Wogen and took her second career victory after six starts. Mike Whitaker’s Talehia finished second and Ron Millman’s Sister Mago was third.

In the filly trot’s other elimination, Millman’s Progressive also occupied the field, although the margin of victory was considerably smaller. The daughter of II Mago maintained a front step pad of more than two lengths through the first three fractions before eventual runner-up Bobbie Mac closed the gap to the nose. The pair battled through the final turn and into the stretch before Progressive crossed half a length in front in 2:04 2/5. Scott Woogen owns the winner. Logan Ebersole’s Bobbie Mac finished second and Sarah Andrews’ Imarealgogetter was third.

Bob McKim’s Kalispel raced to a time of 2:03 3/5 miles in the second of two freshman colt trotting divisions on Saturday, spanning the field by 11 lengths in 2:03 3/5. The Gregory Pecs The gelding has made four starts – all in Woodstock – and has $36,400 in the bank account to date. He won the $6,000 Virginia Sire Stake elimination and the $64,000 final, where he took the field handily in both contests. Millman’s Doctor Scott finished second and Jason Skinner’s Wolfpack Bourbon was third.

Les Givens’ convicted felon captured the $8,000 Colt Division first trot in a gate-to-wire effort in 2:05 2/5. The Gangster betting gelding won his second lifetime race in 2:05 2/5 after starting from outside post seven. He finished 1 1/4 lengths ahead of second-place Dan The Man (Bib Roberts) and Seminole Breeze (Stacey McLenaghan). The winner is owned by Arlene Cameron and Nanticoke Racing.

A second elimination round will take place next weekend (October 18 and 19), while a four-pack of $80,000 finals will take place on Saturday, October 25.
