Capital City Country Club asks to end its old lease with the city of Tallahassee to buy the real estate of the golf course downright. The leadership of the club believes that ownership would stabilize its finances, allow access to loans and finance long -term improvements.
The request comes after years of financial struggles, including decreasing membership and expensive storm damage of last year’s tornadoes. Renovations at competing clubs such as Seminole Legacy and Killearn Estates have also taken away members.
The building includes the 18-hole course, a storage building and a equipment building. The site rated the site at $ 1.15 million. City Commissioners will accept the proposal during their meeting of 17 September, where they will consider authorizing the city manager to carry out an assessment and to draw up a potential sales plan.
Club officials say that the current lease of 99 years limits their assets to protect external financing. Fully ownership would enable the facility to pursue loans and investments that are necessary to modernize the infrastructure and to upgrade the course. Planned improvements include bringing the course to NCAA standards, which could lead to a partnership with the Golf Team of the Florida A & M University. The club also believes that upgrades would help attract new members and to stimulate the economic activity near the center of Tallahassee.
Capital City Club, founded in 1908, is one of the oldest jobs in Florida and has long been a community hub for golf, swimming, tournaments, weddings and other events. The clubhouse was designed by the well -known architect Albert W. Tillinghast and the track is part of the historic golf rail of Florida.
The building also has a complex history. It was once part of the plantation of Edward Houstoun and research indicates that at least 23 unmarked graves from to slaves are on the site. A committee started working in 2021 to install historic markings to honor those who are buried there.
