The Chicago Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks faced off on Friday, October 17 at the United Center. The Blackhawks went for their third straight win in their sixth game of the 2025-2026 season. As the Canucks headed to their second consecutive away game after defeating the Dallas Stars 5-3 on Thursday night (October 16).
The Canucks ultimately won this game as well, winning 3-2 in a shootout. Here are the highlights.
Summary of the game
The Blackhawks got the scoring started in the first period with a power play goal from Ryan Donato. It was Donato’s second goal of the season.

The count was made possible by a beautiful pass from Andre Burakovsky to find Donato’s back door. Defender Artyom Levshunov was credited with the secondary assist, his second helper of the season.
The Blackhawks ended the first frame with another goal, this time courtesy of Tyler Bertuzzi.

Bertuzzi was assisted by defender Sam Rinzel, his first assist of the season. Rinzel scored his first NHL goal against the Montreal Canadiens on October 11.
The Canucks got one back in the second inning, a power-play goal by Jake DeBrusk, who celebrated his 29th birthday tonight. He was assisted by Conor Garland and Quinn Hughes.

The first period went to the Blackhawks, but the second went to the Canucks, despite only four shots on goal in the frame for Vancouver.
The third period had a questionable decision with Bertuzzi’s goal being canceled due to interference. The Blackhawks challenged the call and lost. But they held on in the ensuing power play, which ultimately led to overtime.

Overtime was, as always, a tense affair with a lot of back and forth. But no one scored, so this match ended in a shootout.
Unfortunately, Brock Boeser scored in the shootout to give the Canucks the win, 3-2.

What’s next
The Blackhawks will have a quick turnaround when they host the Anaheim Ducks and former 11-year Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville on Sunday, October 19. Meanwhile, the Canucks also continue on Sunday with the third game of a five-game road trip against the Washington Capitals.
