Canterbury Park Meeting ends with an increased presence

The 31st season of Racen in Canterbury Park concluded on Saturday evening in the same way as it started on 24 May with Minnesota-Foked Merrieveen IC Gold and leading Jockey Harry Hernandez in the Winnerskring. Hernandez won 70 races, on top of the Jockey classification the entire meeting, and his third Canterbury row title.

The average daily presence rose by 4 percent and the daily average on the track remained consistent with the previous season. Three less racing days and 34 fewer races were held compared to 2024. Weather challenges, including high heat indexes, rain and lightning ensured that two full cards were canceled and two were shortened. An extra date was added in July that brought the total racing days to 50. Four races that were postponed from Thursday were added to the closing evening and a 13-race card with the treatment of $ 1,746,078.

“Canterbury Park remains an important part of the summer tender of Minnesota,” said Managing Director John Groen. “This year we have attracted more than a quarter of a million spectators from the entire region for food, pleasure and racing, and we quickly work on a number of entertainment and fan experience for the next season.”

The total wallets paid to horse owners, trainers and jockeys were 23 percent less than 2024, which resulted in a smaller average field size, 6.74 horses per race compared to the 7.36 of 2024.

“We will continue to collaborate with the state legislator during the upcoming session to tackle purses. Horse Racing and the horse industry have an important economic impact on the entire state, who touch families and farms in every community,” Groen said. “There are a number of commonsen solutions that would benefit both horse races and tribes and charities, and we will continue to work with all interested parties to let Minnesota’s Racing the Premier Racing Circuit race in the Upper Midwest.”
