Again CBS Sports presents our Candid Coaches series, which bring relevant topics and problems in the men’s basketball to the attention. Gary Parrish and Matt Norlander have interviewed almost 100 coaches on various topics in recent weeks. Coaches spoke in the background and were given anonymity to offer unfiltered opinions. Today we look at the diversity of new faces in new places.
Changes in the zero landscape and the hectic nature of the transfer portal have accelerated sales in the coaching of the university.
Namely: 18% of the main coaching structure of the power conference reversed in the spring. That is 14 out of 79 jobs. That is a good piece, and in fact College Hoepels had 14 ACC/Big East/Big Ten/Big 12/SEC -Flips for the second consecutive year. As far as I can see, 28 High Major Coaching changes is a basketball record in the university in a period of two years.
In 2025 we had makeovers in Maryland, Miami, Indiana Iowa, Villanova, Virginia, Texas and Texas A&M and six more in the Big-Boy competitions. Some of these recruitments will flame by 2030. Others will turn out to be home runs, with perhaps one, two or three of the coaches in new covers killed this year to thrive in their new schools for more than ten years.

Quotes that stood out
About McCollum
- “I didn’t know much about him before he went to Drake. Just heard that a D-II coach was at a high level, but I started studying his things last year. They played a coach with whom I collaborated … I watched one game, and it is just incredible what he does. Place.
- “Ben should never have taken that long to get a power conference job. Look at his career record and performance. Great coach. He will consistently win as long as his administration supports him.”
- “McCollum, I don’t know anything about it, but it seems that he is a controlling pace and defensive guy, so that will translate, regardless of which staff they have. It also seems like a perfect personality location that is suitable for a new head coach. And his track record is super impressive.”
- “Ben McCollum because of Fit. From the region, winning at an insane clip and has now shown that he can recruit and coach in the current landscape of Di. Iowa fans will love his attitude and playing style.”
About Wade

- “I think it is the gangster, will wade (laughing). Fits perfectly with the state. I think that is a match made in heaven.”
- “Always has been a really good coach and recruiter. This job suits him and his personality, but also what is needed there. Someone who doesn’t shit over the Blue Bloods around him.”
- “Perfect marriage with program. Passionate fan base with deep bags. Talent -rich region. Plays a nice style. Very good chance of winning early and consistent in the weakest [Power Five] competition.”
- “What he was fired for the rules is different – look at Houston with Kelvin Sampson. He is the perfect fit to reach with a high ceiling type work. He will recruit, coach and sell that program.”
About Miller
- “He did not lose his job with an elite program like Arizona because he was not performing. He has the experience and the ability to fit perfectly in Texas.”
- “It’s not really close. He has proven that he can win at an Elite school (Arizona) and he is in Texas. It is a place where you will win. And: Sean wins.”
- “Perfect fit and won big [at that level] Al. Very smart rent. Ensures that they will remain good after the worst period of four years in history. Went from several elite eight at a school only for hoops to make a tournament for four years. Big slide. [Texas] Will come back. “
About ODY
- “Some coaches are hired, it makes sense and the perfect place. For me, ODY is an easy choice because the program he went is the most synergistic fit of all boys. I got to know Ryan and know that UvA is good based on having that area. He is, what he appreciates and the university fits perfectly.”
“He has a personal relationship with the university and he has won where he has been: Umbc, Utah State, VCU.”
About others
- Medved: “How can someone discount what Niko Medved has done at every stop in his career? He inherited a disaster at Furman and in three years he won. Drake, he won. And what he did at CSU is more than impressive.”
- Jensen: “I had the chance to spend a year with Alex when I was [younger]. He has a way about him. Modest, exceptionally smart, clearly very well informed about the game, but tries not to get too smart. He has an idea of people. “

With our “Who is the best player?” And “who is the best team?” Survey questions This year I received data from the archives to show who the QS has won in recent years. Let’s do the same for today’s study, because it is a question that we asked dating from 2014.
Recent winners of this question – with links to go back and see how the coaches voted every year – are …
2024: John Calipari to Arkansas. Way too early to tell, but he was objectively not the best recruitment in year 1.
2023: Rick Pitino to St. John’s. An easy choice not so long ago and it certainly looks like the right choice from today.
2022: Shaheen Holloway to Seton Hall. A strict mood that year, but a miss, because Holloway was hired in the same year as Jon Scheyer, Todd Golden, Dennis Gates and Chris Jans.
2021: Chris Beard to Texas. It ended disastrous. Shaka Smart finished second, and that follows. Tommy Lloyd to Arizona wasn’t even top-five!
2019999999999999999999999999999999999999999111 2019 2019 2019 20199999 E Were991999999999999983111113313313111111115222222221111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111 box -11111111111As11111As1As1a’s1a’s1a’s1a’s1a’s d1a’s dam that ‘to: Fred Hoiberg to Nebraska. He finished well for boys who turned out to be better for their schools: Nate Oats, Mick Cronin, Tj Otzelberger and Eric Musselman.
2018: Chris Mack to Louisville. Mack defeated the correct answer with one percentage point that year: then Hurley to UConn.
2017: Archie Miller to Indiana. A clear miss. Brad Underwood to Illinois is the clear best recruitment of 2017; He took second place to Miller that year.
2016: Brad Underwood to the state of Oklahoma. Yes, Underwood had two jobs in the power conference in two years. Beard to Texas Tech or Greg Gard in Wisconsin, however, ended as the most fertile recruitments.
2015: Shaka Smart to Texas. He won comfortably, with Ben Howland to Mississippi State second. The correct answer was third in third place that year with 12% of the votes: Tennessee who hires Rick Barnes.
2014: Buzz Williams to Virginia Tech. Identical to 2018 defeated the top voice in that year the leading voices with 1%: Bruce Pearl Until Auburn became second.
I like to ask this question every year to read the opinion of coaches about their contemporaries. That said, think that the winner is far from guaranteed the best in their recruitment class. In the 10 earlier iterations of this question, it is fair to say that coaches are doing well with the number 1 pick maybe twice.
That does not mean that McCollum turns out not to be excellent. After winning 395 games (and four national titles) in 15 seasons in Division II Northwest Missouri State, the resident of Iowa Di entered Drake and went 31-4. The fit with the Hawkeyes it seems that it could change the dynamics in the Big Ten in the following decade if the philosophies of McCollum are adjustable to the high major level.
I expected that Wade Top-three would end when we presented this question, and in fact he took the 2-slot. His self -confidence and personality profile linked to the position of NC State in the Triangle Pecking Order has many coaches who would like to see if the Wolfpack can be a national factor in the coming two years. That will be a nice one to watch.
And with Miller he voted earlier in this question, only a few years ago when he went to Xavier. He has more victories than every coach in this year’s cycle. He goes to Texas, with the idea that he can do more than at Xavier. With the Share new rules for sharing incomeWe will see if that is the case. Miller has long been called one of the best coaches without one last four to his name. He would like to throw that label as soon as possible in what his last stop should be in the coaching of the university.
Big Picture, I look at McCollum at Iowa, Wade to set, medvited to Minnesota, Oomdom to Virginia, Alex Jensen to Utah, Luke Loucks to the state of Florida, etc. … and I don’t think there was a number of carousel cycle in 2025. Second choice voices for Medved and Odom.
Even Jai Lucas and Bucky McMillan-no from both until this year have been a high major coach, each has a mood. This is a promising, relatively young class of coaches who step into new performances. It’s not just about who they were when they won the job, it’s about how they can adapt in the coming years. The College Sports is in phase 3 or 4 of probably a mega-shift of five phases, and only the coaches who understand the site and how they can map, run and adjust, will still hold on to these jobs, or better, in five years.
