Trade proposals are a fun way to provide the summer cooling in NHL News. But not all trade fields are great ideas. A recent hypothetical that the Calgary Flames and Nazem Kadri links to the Montreal Canadiens does not succeed entirely for the Geurtest.
The field was presented by Kuljit Parmar of the Fansed Blog “a winning habit”. In it he suggests that the Canadiens Juraj Slafkovsky, Alex Newhook, and a concept choice to Calgary for Kadri, where a high ceiling winger is removed for a second -line center fix. The trading field is not only daring – it is a huge too much payment.
Why this trade makes little sense for the Canadiens
As productive as Kadri was last season, he is also 13 years older than the most important piece that goes back to the Flames in Slafkovsky. On only 21, Slafkovsky has the unused NHL potential, while it will not be long before Kadri shows the natural decline that comes with age. Yes, Kadri placed 75 points in 2023-24 and 67 in 2024-25, but it won’t be long before he shows signs of an inevitable downswing. History tells us that through the mid-1930s rarely maintain the top production for a long time, and with a cap-hit of $ 7 million with another four years, Kadri is a risky investment.
Slafkovsky, on the other hand, goes into the stage of his career where real breakout seasons take place. He comes back-to-back campaigns of 50 points and has hardly scratched the surface of his potentially. His combination of size, skill and growing confidence among Martin St. Louis gives the Canadiens something difficult to find-a cost-driven, high-ups upper top-six winger for the coming years.
The exchange of him now for a player on the back nine of his career would sell low on a future star while buying high on a veteran whose best days may already lie behind him. Even if Kadri has brought grit and playoff experience in the short term, Montreal is not yet in a “Win-Now” window. Sacrificing a fundamental piece for a push of two or three years is short -sighted team building.
The money is also a huge consideration in this trade
Even more main screens is the financial side of this proposal. The Canadiens would send $ 10.5 million in the deal and a draft choice. If the idea is to dump Newhook on the flames, it seems strange, since it offers a considerable production. If the idea is to think the deal with Newhook and the choice, it is wild to imagine that the flames would not see Slafkovsky as payment enough.
Kadri’s leadership and tenacity are valuable, but they are not worth the future. The Canadiens must be aimed at developing their young core, not to dismantle. The actions of Slafkovsky would now be the kind of movement that has been haunting a franchise for ten years.
Simply put, this is not just a bad trade idea. It is one that could completely derail the long -term vision of Montreal.
