Vasek Pospisil did not go without a fight.
The Canadian lost his first round match at the National Bank Open presented by Rogers on the Facundo Bagnis of Argentina on Sunday, but it did not come with his share in Drama.
Pospisil, who announced earlier this week that he will retire at the end of the tournament, took a medical time out and left the court during the first set. Although he was eventually able to return, Pospisil looked extremely uncomfortable as soon as the game resumed.
Bagnis then won the opening set 6-2, with the Native BC of Vernon, BC that worked through the last points.
However, Pospisil turned the script in the second set, by switching the pain to win three consecutive games and even the game with a 6-3 victory. With Momentum by his side, the 35-year-old brell left a roar after securing the last point of the fifth game.
Bagnis eventually spoiled the Cinderella story in the third and final set, which came away with a 6-3 victory.
Tennis Canada announced the news on Monday that Pospisil will retire after the tournament and his 18-year-old professional career ended after he had received a HoofdtraW Wilde Card for his home event.
He reached a singles high ranking of no. 25 in 2014 and climbed a year later to number 4 in Doubles.
Pospisil won the Wimbledon Heren Doubles title in 2014 alongside American Jack Sock to deal with six other ATP men’s double titles.
He appeared in three singles finals but never won a title.
Pospisil represented Canada twice at the Olympic Games (London 2012 and Rio 2016).
He also represented Canada several times on the Davis Cup since his debut in 2008. Pospisil played in 35 tires and earned 33 victories, allowing Canada to conquer his first title in 2022.
