Can United make the most of Wolves’ woes to move up the table? – Republic of Mancunia: A Manchester United Blog

Manchester United’s match against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford tonight gives us a good chance to end 2025 on a high. It’s been a difficult year for our fans. We finished 15th and lost a cup final to Spurs, but if the results go our way tonight we could end up in the top four tonight.

United currently sit sixth in the table and are looking to build momentum in the race for European qualification with some tougher games ahead, while Wolves sit at the foot of the table with an all-time low points tally and a record-breaking winless start to the season.

Recent results underline the formal gap between these two parties. United’s most recent meeting with Wolves this season came just a few weeks ago at Molineux, where we won comfortably 4-1 thanks to a brace from Bruno Fernandes and goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Mason Mount. That win not only strengthened our position in the rankings, but also reflected our attacking potential by firing on all cylinders. Wolves’ only goal in that match, scored by Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, was their first in several matches and did little to halt their slide.

In contrast, Wolves’ form has been dismal throughout the campaign. They recently suffered a 2-1 defeat at Liverpool, a defeat that extended their winless streak in the Premier League to what has become a record for the club in a single season. Despite some competitive moments at Anfield, Wolves remain without a win after eighteen games, with just two points.

Although last season will feel like a long time ago for Wolves fans, they did enjoy a 1-0 win at Old Trafford in April, with Pablo Sarabia’s free-kick proving decisive. But we can hope that we have put these kinds of shaky results behind us and can secure all the points tonight, even with the number of absences that await us.

Injuries and availability will significantly determine the lineup of both teams. For United, Bruno Fernandes has been ruled out with a hamstring injury, meaning the captain and creative center will miss tonight’s match despite his eagerness to return to training. Manager Ruben Amorim confirmed that none of his offside stars, including Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt and Harry Maguire, are expected back in time for this match, forcing him to shuffle his squad and rely on depth players for key roles. Amorim was unequivocal when asked about the situation: “No, I don’t think they will be ready. Bruno is not playing, Kobbie is not ready, Matta is not ready, Harry is not ready – so I don’t think we will have any more players.”

Wolves’ injury concerns and suspensions have also taken their toll. Midfielder João Gomes is suspended and Ladislav Krejci’s availability is in doubt after recent absences due to a knee problem. These setbacks, on top of an already low-confidence squad, will make life even more difficult for manager Rob Edwards as he looks for a breakthrough in a campaign that has defied expectations in the wrong way.

Amorim has spoken candidly about the challenge ahead, recognizing that even teams struggling at the bottom can be tough to break, especially when adversity strikes. He described Wolves as a ‘difficult team’ despite their run of results, and stressed the importance of securing all three points to end the year on a positive note.

Tactically, United will likely look to control the midfield and exploit Wolves’ defensive weaknesses, while Wolves must find a way to spark an attack that has looked blunt for most of the season. The crowd at Old Trafford will expect goals and a performance that reflects United’s higher ambitions, while Wolves will be desperate to avoid another defeat that could further cement their struggles.

On paper, this looks like a game that United should win comfortably, and also increase our goal difference. But you would have said the same thing a few weeks ago about facing Everton’s ten men. United can’t keep wasting opportunities to get more points on the board, so they must win tonight.
