Can Newcastle end the dreadful Etihad record and keep their cup defense alive?

Newcastle United heads to Manchester City tonight with history against the Magpies.

Overturning a two-goal deficit at the Etihad would be a monumental task for most sides, but Newcastle’s torrid record on the pitch tonight does little to dampen confidence.

It’s been more than a decade since Newcastle last won at Manchester City, a 2-0 League Cup success in October 2014. That evening, a teenage Rolando Aarons put the visitors ahead before Moussa Sissoko sealed progress for the Magpies in Manchester.

A lot has changed since then; relegation, promotion, transformative takeover and two Champions League campaigns have all been involved in Newcastle’s story since the club last celebrated success at the Etihad.

Even that win was the first in twelve attempts and the only success in 22 attempts since Manchester City moved to their current home city in the summer of 2003.

Eddie Howe’s underdogs must also overcome their own away blues this season. Newcastle is in fifteenth place in the Premier League away games in the 2025/2026 season, after winning only two of twelve games in a row. Only three teams, Leeds, Burnley and Wolves, have taken fewer points in away matches.

City, on the other hand, are at the top in terms of home wins in the Premier League. Their 29 points from 12 games are matched only by league leaders Arsenal, while only Spurs in August and Bayer Leverkusen in November have left the Etihad with a win in all competitions.

Newcastle’s success in last season’s Carabao Cup sparked an outpouring of emotion on Tyneside. Their victory over Liverpool at Wembley was the club’s first domestic silverware in 70 years and the first trophy of any kind since 1969. It had been a long, long wait.

Now Newcastle need a performance to even surpass that night if the Magpies are to overcome the odds and book a date with Arsenal next month.

It seems like a daunting task, but records – even miserable ones – are there to be broken.
