It was clearly very happy to see us! This is the CAM EV Microvan, a small, zero-emission, single-seat commercial vehicle that we chanced upon last week at CETA & MobilityX Asia 2025. It is scheduled to be launched in Malaysia in the second quarter of 2026 and will be priced at around RM65,000.

What it appears to be is a Nextem Vaquita. A What? Nextem is a Hong Kong-based green mobility company that specializes in commercial electric vehicles, and the Vaquita (Google the word to see something even cuter than this van) is one of its smallest products. We doubt those smiley stickers are standard, but look, the charging flap is where the open mouth is! Sounds logical…

Since it has a cab-chassis construction, several body styles are possible, including a rear-loading garbage truck, a pressure washing vehicle, a wash and sweeper truck, a coffee truck and a closed drum truck, although it appears CAM Malaysia will mainly offer this as a ‘high box’ van. It’s rear-wheel drive, but don’t get any crazy ideas – there’s a pretty big difference between driving sideways and tips sideways.

This 3,500 mm long, 1,240 mm wide (so narrow that only one wiper is needed) and 1,700 mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,350 mm, can handle 2.14 cubic meters goods (1.8 x 1.1 x 1.08 meters) with a loading capacity of 255 kg. The rear engine can deliver 13.6 or 20.4 hp; anyway the torque is 105 Nm and the top speed is 80 km/h. The 15.97 kWh LFP battery can be AC charged up to 3.3 kW, giving a range of 150 km. The curb weight is 800 kg including the 250 kg battery.

You can enter from the left door or the right door – it doesn’t matter as there is only one centrally located seat (which a McLaren F1 needs). There’s a keyed ignition, manual windows, a foot-operated parking brake, air conditioning (guess how many zones), a headlight level adjustment, dual USB-A ports, a rotary switch (RNDE; we assume E stands for Eco or Efficiency) and not much else. Airbags? Err…

Do you see your next Shopee broadcast coming to you in one of these? Or do you think you are more likely to come across one near you? evening market? Other EV vans in Malaysia include BYD T3, CAM EA4, EC35 and Jenhoo EV48, Foton iBlue, Higer Ace E1, Maxus eDeliver 3 and eDeliver 7.
