Xander Schauffele’s win at the Baycurrent Classic marks another win for Callaway’s popular Apex TCB iron platform, the company’s most popular on Tour.

Including Schauffele’s two major titles in 2024 and Jon Rahms Masters victories in 2023 and US Open victories in 2021, the TCB platform has won the grand slam over the past five years.

Schauffele has been in the Apex TCB ’24 and the previous edition TCB ’21 since their 2021 release, but the current model is a lot larger in chassis size than the TaylorMade P750s he used as a rookie. While TCB stands for “Tour Cavity Back,” the Apex TCB 24s have slightly more offset than other irons in the category.

And there are even more players who have switched from pure blades, like this week’s guest on GOLF’s Fully Exhausted podcast, Erik van Rooyen. Van Rooyen switched from the 2018 Apex MB blades about a year ago.

“It was a matter of forgiveness. And above all curiosity,” Van Rooyen said about the switch. “I’ve been playing in a blade-style club since high school. And I mean, eventually technology will probably have some effect on it and improve things.

“It was accomplished out of curiosity. What I found was that I switched to the TCB the week before Sony and just had a tighter spread. That’s it, a tighter spread.”

The performance benefits were clear, but the TCBs and MBs look very different. Fully rested co-presenter Johnny Wunder asked van Rooyen whether that made the transition difficult at all.

“I think aesthetically it has to suit my eye,” he said. “I feel like I’m quite sensitive in that regard. As soon as something looks quite strange, it’s hard for me to go, oh, just close your eyes and punch. I see it and I get a feeling for it.”

“But I think the transition was like, it was a lot easier than I thought it would be, and I was impressed with that. So yeah, when I played on a blade for so long, I was like, ‘Jeez, dude, I should try this for maybe two weeks.'”
