While the Calgary flames continue with their retool, a factor that many fans point out is a game-changing forward. The Flames have their franchise defender and goalkeeper in Zayne Parekh and Dustin Wolf, but nobody stands out in Forward. This has led to several conversations about how to get a top-end ahead, whether it is the design, free desk or trade. Perhaps the Flames have already set up their top ends and will come to the fore due to great development.
Today, however, we will look at an option that might be off the market, but is still being thrown in Jason Robertson.
Robertson’s career so far
Before the NHL
After he was set up in the fourth round of the OHL design of 2015, Robertson would start his journey to the NHL who played for the Kingston Frontenacs. He would spend three and a half seasons with the Frontenacs, with a box to the Niagara Ice Dogs in his last season. In general, he would collect 149 goals and 317 points in his OHL career, with a TOP Scorer Award in 2018–19. His most important season would clearly be his concept year.
With the design on the line, Robertson scored an excellent 42 goals and 39 assists for 81 points in 68 games. This version is usually bound for a selection in the first round, but due to some concern about skating, Robertson was surprisingly available on day two. The Dallas stars would like to brag him with the 39th pick of the NHL design of 2017.
NHL -career
With a great performance in his last junior and Ahl Rookie season, Robertson would be praised as a top perspective in the competition. He made it to the NHL and proved it. In the short season of 2020-21, Robertson was perhaps the best player on the stars as Rookie. In just 51 games he impressed 17 goals and 28 assists for 45 points. At the end of the season, Robertson was second to Kirill Kaprizov when Calder votes.
Robetson only built his Rookie season and improved to more than one point per match with 79 points in 74 games. His second year saw him become one of the best players in the NHL. In the 2022-23 season, Robertson scored 46 goals and 109 points in 82 games while he was just outside the top five in scoring the competition. He and the stars would go on their first deep run of many and were eliminated in the Western Conference final by the Vegas Golden Knights. The following year Robertson delayed a bit and placed only 29 goals and 80 points in 82 games. The stars would go back to the final of the conference and lose again, this time to the Edmonton Oilers.
The start of this last season was a bit shaky for Robertson. The first 23 games only saw him pick up 14 points, and it took until about mid -January before he really looked on paper again. That, in combination with the decrease in the previous year, people had Robertson interrogated. Robertson, however, strongly closed the season and scored 35 goals and 45 assists for 80 points in 82 games. The stars made the conference for the third year in a row and unfortunately lost again from the Edmonton Oilers.
Rumor
When the low season started, the name of Robertson hit the Germany Market. It was confusing and almost out of nowhere. The stars were not necessary to exchange one of their best players. The reasons behind this seem to be that the production of Robertson from the 2022-23 season fell and his play -offs on paper were very mediocre. Another was that it is said that the stars were not sure if they could fit in with his upcoming expansion under the cap.
This started to kick around fake trade and constant rumors. But while the hockey world works, nothing happened. The flames were occasionally thrown into this rumor mill, whereby some fans love the idea and others are not too enthusiastic about it. A source stated that the flames were interested in the actions of Rasmus Andersson and more for Robertson.
The rumors died when Star’s CEO and President, Brad Alberts, tweeted the pair of eyes emoji. Many assumed that this was a Robertson extension. Nothing followed and the tweet was two weeks ago. At the moment, however, it really seems that Robertson will remain a star. Nevertheless, it is still nice to view the possibilities.
Robertson’s possibility
Whether you are a fan of the idea, Robertson would be missing in the line -up of the Flames. What that would be is a possible top scorer who urgently needs the flames.
The positive points
There are tons of positives when it comes to welcoming Jason Robertson to your hockey team. He is a proven top scorer in this competition and is ready to find his form again. Quite comfortable during a point per game in his career with 394 points in 374 games and is close to the half goal per game marking with 168.
Robertson is the full package. He packs a powerful shot, so that he could be a consistent 35-40 goal scorer during his career. Even if he does not let go of a laser of a shot, he has the mentality to easily position himself in places to score goals easier.
Apart from his target score, Robertson is also a great playmaker. There is a reason why he has produced 45+ assists in the past three seasons. Robertson has a fantastic vision and intelligence when passing the puck. He can do what the situation asks for, whether it is about cycling, giving and going, etc. His big frame enables him to be high and strong and the puck easily protect against opponents. Mix this with his fast, silky hands, and it’s hard to get Robertson from the puck. Even with his insufficient skating, he has developed habits to adjust, and it is not as much a problem as it should be.
Attacking is not even the only area that shines Robertson. He has developed a number of very good defensive habits that have seen his results shoot up. In the past two seasons, Robertson has become one of the better two -way wings in the competition.
Robertson would bring in a level of attack that the flames have not had since 2022. He would be that much needed piece in advance and would be a great top complement at the depth that the flames develop extremely well.
The negatives
Even with a phenomenal player such as Robertson, some negatives can be followed. A concern that could occur is whether Robertson is sufficient to bring the flames to the next level. Robertson would undoubtedly make a lot of improvement in the team. The acquisition of Robertson would bring an incentive to immediately become a Playoff team. However, would he only take them to the cup heat level? Probably not. It has always been difficult to succeed with a wing player as the main motivation of attack for a team, and it is not as if the flames have an excellent support cast that wait. Options to become even better can be limited, and perhaps the flames would be comparable to the current Day Los Angeles Kings.
Another would be his contract situation. Robertson has another year about his deal before he becomes a limited free agent. I feel that the obvious step would be to let him play for the team first, instead of hurrying a contract and ending up in a Jonathan Hubermdeau situation. What if the flames acquire him and he decides not to expand? He can sign a one -year -old deal and walk to a free desk, and you are again a situation of Matthew Tkachuk operated.
The final would be the trading costs. A Robertson deal is not cheap. As mentioned earlier, the Flames were interested in Rasmus Andersson Plus, but what is that plus? With the current situation of the Flames, would they feel comfortable to move a pick in the first round in the deep 2026 design? It is clear that the flames may have the chance to acquire a player like Robertson, but they should feel comfortable with the price they pay.
Would Robertson be a good option?
If Robertson was an option for the Flames, he would be a fairly good. He is an attacking weapon that this team misses, and he is young enough to fit the timeline they want. An option with a double threat that also plays well at both ends of the ice. The negatives are much more situational and the flames would do their due diligence to ensure that they feel comfortable with what they acquire.
Being happy or not with the possibility of acquiring Jason Robertson, it is often driven by personal opinion about which direction the flames should be led. If you want them to get the next best prospect, it is not your favorite option. If you want to go back to the fight as soon as possible, you love it. If someone whose thinking process always runs between Fantasyland and reality, Robertson will always be an option that depends on the costs and situation personally. I would not want tons of the future plus rasmus Andersson for him mortgage, but I also understand that the flames will always try to compete.
Jason Robertson is the type of player who would try to acquire almost every team. One of the most scoring players since entering the competition, it’s a dream to have such a person. The rumors around him, however, seemed strange and now seem to be dead. So although it is nice to introduce you, it really feels like a pipe dream if you want to exchange for Robertson.
