Cain Velasquez expects to go home from prison today.
Velasquez, the former UFC heavyweight champion, has been jailed since he was charged with attempted murder, among other charges, following a February 2022 incident in which the fighter went rogue and attempted to kill Harry Goularte Jr. to kill. Goularte Jr. is currently facing charges himself and is accused of abusing Velasquez’s young son, although the case is still before the courts.
Goularte’s process is is expected to take place next monthand has faced numerous delays, including those due to the actions of Velasquez, who embarked on a highway chase and shooting in 2022 in an attempt to carry out vigilante justice, ultimately shooting an innocent man instead. To make matters worse, Goularte was on his way to getting a court-ordered ankle monitor when he was ambushed by Velasquez — in other words, he had fulfilled his bail conditions.
As a result, Velasquez was looking at life in prison, which led to a number of ‘Free Cain’ protests among the MMA fanbase. He was, after all was given a five-year prison sentence after pleading no contest on the charges against him.
With time served and possible reductions for good behavior and attendance at certain programs, it appears Velasquez will be released early.
In a statement on behalf of Velasquez published on his official social media account on Saturday, the fighter said: “Following my release on February 15, I am exploring the idea of hosting a one-day Holotropic Breathing Seminar in the San Jose area.”
A second message notes that the final episode of “Sunday’s with Cain” had arrived while the hunter was still in prison. “After ten months of conversations, reflection, growth, laughter, hard truths and healing, the chapter we lived together behind the walls is coming to an end,” it reads in part.
Cain Velasquez is still facing charges released on parole for four years.
