The Calgary Flames announced today that they have drafted Dryden Hunt from the Calgary Wranglers. The winger has been in the Flames system for a few years and played five NHL games last season.
What does this mean for the Calgary Flames?
This is an unusual decision for the Flames for several reasons. Firstly, there has been little to no injury speculation within the squad, and even with Nazem Kadri taking a maintenance day today, it appears he will continue to play.
The Flames also currently have Yegor Sharangovich as a healthy player, with Justin Kirkland and Adam Klapka playing over him. Adding an extra attacker in Hunt feels like added value.
Hunt has earned a spot at the NHL level, with six points in four games. He leads the Wranglers in points this season. What’s strange is that the team opted to draft him ahead of one of their younger forwards. Rory Kerins has five points and Matvei Gridin has three points in two games in the AHL. An odd decision to let Hunt decide either one.
Moreover, this seems to suggest that there is another corresponding step to follow. Whether that’s an injury update or another move to send a player down remains to be seen.
Anyway, welcome back to the NHL, Dryden Hunt!
