According to a Provo Police press release, officers responded to the crash at the intersection of 900 W Center St in Provo, Utah at 11:45 a.m. Thursday. After investigation, police arrested Davis and took him to the police station, where he was charged with driving under the influence.
The 20-year-old was released to treat “minor” injuries he suffered in the crash, and his vehicle was impounded.
“We are aware of the allegations and are investigating the situation,” BYU Athletics wrote in a statement.
Davis, who arrived as a transfer from Southern Illinois this offseason after making 64 appearances and 41 starts in two seasons for the Salukis, started the first two games of the season for the Cougars, averaging nine points on 58 percent shooting. Last season, Davis averaged 16.3 points and 4.9 rebounds per game.
This news comes at a crucial time for BYU. The Cougars are a legitimate national title contender currently ranked No. 7 in the AP Poll and are preparing for a top-10 non-conference matchup against No. 3 UConn on Saturday in Boston. BYU features the No. 1 recruit of the class of 2025 in freshman AJ Dybantsa, who returns to Boston on Saturday and is expected to be a top-3 pick in next year’s NBA draft.
Davis could also face discipline from BYU if he is found to have consumed alcohol. BYU students need to do that sign a code of honor stating that students should abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, vaping, marijuana and other substance abuse.
Failure to comply with these rules is possible result in penalties as serious as suspension or expulsion from school.
Davis missed BYU’s win against Delaware on Tuesday with a leg injury. However, BYU coach Kevin Young said the 6-foot-4 forward was “progressing just fine” when reporters asked about Davis after the game. Young also noted that Davis’ absence was noticeable.
“I told the coaches afterwards, when you take one guy out, it’s great what it does for the team,” Young said. “He plays such a big role because of his toughness, his size and his defensive versatility. I think that probably made us all appreciate it even more.”
