Welcome to the Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course in Southampton, Bermuda. This windy par 71 design by Robert Trent Jones Sr. is located along the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and is relatively short at less than 6,900 meters. This will be the seventh edition of this tournament on this golf course and it is the sixth of seven FedEx Cup Fall events with only the RSM Classic remaining, back in the United States next week in Georgia.
Just like last week in Los Cabos, Mexico, there are 120 players in the field and there is a 36-hole cut. The window is shrinking as there are now only two events left in which players can either work their way into the top 100 of the FedEx Cup standings or avoid falling out of the top 100. You’ll need to find yourself there by the end of the FedEx Cup Fall to receive full PGA Tour status in 2026.

As you can easily conclude, the greens here are Bermudagrass. They are large putting surfaces and will move very slowly due to the wind. The fairways are of medium width with very few rough edges, but there are a number of bunkers to drive over, with an emphasis on accuracy, especially in high winds. This is not necessarily a bomber’s course, but if there is some length off the tee it can be an advantage in windy conditions.
Over the past six editions of the Bermuda Championship we haven’t always seen wind, but it looks like that will be the case this week. The weather forecast indicates that driving speeds will range between 25 and 30 km/h per hour during the four days.
I watched Strokes Gained: Off the Tee and on approach. I looked at Good Drives Gained, Scrambling and Strokes Gained: Putting (Bermudagrass). I have also used Hole Proximity from 100-150 yards. Ideally, we want a good golf ball driver that is sharp with the wedges and short game. By the way, did we mention the wind? Yes, this also makes me lean towards players with a lower ball flight and those who have shown they can differentiate themselves in such conditions.
It’s a bit of a mixed bag for me this week as far as the correlated courses go. I looked at Pebble Beach, Waialae Country Club (Sony Open), Sea Island (RSM Classic), PGA National (Cognizant Classic) and TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. What we show here is in most cases Bermudagrass, coastal location and/or windy conditions, a preference for accuracy, shorter courses, and also courses where scrambling is paramount.
Matt Wallace (35-1)
The Englishman has done well at coastal venues in the past, winning at Corales Puntacana in 2023 and has also done well in a number of other tournaments that have historically involved windy conditions around the world. He’s been playing a lot on Tour lately in an attempt to maintain his status in the top 100 of the rankings, so he has the motivation to keep things going well. He is one of the best in the field in terms of approach, from 125 to 150 yards, and ranks fifth in this field over the last 24 rounds in Scrambling.
Vince Whaley (36-1)
Whaley is currently 101st in the FedEx Cup standings, so he has plenty of incentive to maintain his current form and his now seven-month streak of cuts. He has finished fifth and eighth here in the past and had a top-10 finish at Sea Island, along with top-20 finishes at the Sony and at TPC Summerlin. These results are entirely possible because Whaley has one of the lower ball flights on Tour. Over the last 24 rounds, he ranks 10th in this field for Scrambling and ninth in SG: Putting (Bermudagrass).
Eric Cole (40-1)
We know that Cole has an excellent short game, is one of the best in the game on approach and with the wedges, and famously lost in a play-off at the Cognizant Classic in 2023. That same season, he finished third at both the RSM Classic and the Shriners in Las Vegas. He finished fifth at the Sony Open in Waialae earlier this year. His current form is exactly the same with two top-10 finishes in his last three starts.

Victor Perez (45-1)
The Frenchman is currently 109th in the FedEx Cup standings. He finished 21st last week, finishing in the top 20 in driving distance, greens in regulation and scrambling. He has finished in the top 20 twice at PGA National and over the past 24 rounds, he ranks 16th in the field for SG: Approach and 24th for SG: Putting (Bermudagrass). It’s also worth noting that Perez has one of the lower ball flights on Tour and has won the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, an event no stranger to high winds.
Takumi Kanaya (60-1)
Kanaya is one of the higher-ranked players in my stats this week, as he is 11th in Scrambling, sixth in Hole Proximity from 100-125 yards, and No. 1 in Good Drives Gained over the last 24 rounds. Kanaya finished in the top 5 four weeks ago as he tries to compete full-time on the PGA Tour. He has 10 international victories in his career.
Ben Kohls (110-1)
I’m going back to the Ben Kohles source again this week with a triple-digit odds because it continues to make sense to me. Over the last 24 rounds he is #1 in this area for SG: Approach. He ranks in the top 10 for good drives and in hole proximity from 100-125 yards. He has never missed a match here in Bermuda or at Sony in Hawaii and finished fifth at the RSM Classic in 2023. Like Whaley, Perez and Kanaya, Kohles also has a particularly low ball flight.
