Butt urges Man United to hold managerial talks with ex-captain

Nicky Butt believes Manchester United should speak to former teammate Roy Keane about the club’s vacant management position.

Manchester United sacked Ruben Amorim on Monday after just 14 months in charge. The club now has ten coaches, interim and permanent, since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Butt has closely followed his former club’s plight, working in the academy under former teammate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as head of first-team development.

The former Manchester United midfielder believes the club could do a lot worse than holding talks with another ex-player about taking over the reins. Speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, he said he is surprised no one has contacted Keane about the position.

Keane has been out of management since 2011 but has regularly spoken of his desire to return. The 54-year-old became the most decorated captain in Manchester United history during his playing career before suddenly leaving in 2005 after a falling out with Ferguson.

“You know, the one I can never figure out is why Roy Keane never got a chance at Man United,” Butt said.

“He’s a mate, so it’s a bit biased, but if you look at his personality, and his playing career, and his character… and what he did in his managerial career. He did an incredible job at Sunderland.”

“If you look at all the problems they (Manchester United) have had, he still lives in the area. I can’t possibly understand how no one has had a conversation with him and said, ‘Would you be interested in the job?'”.

Paul Scholes agreed with Butt’s assessment: “Or even just as an assistant,” Scholes added.

“Think about how he did with Martin O’Neill and these people. If David Moyes had brought in Roy…”

Butt reiterated his disbelief at Keane being continually overlooked for a role at Old Trafford.

“I just think if things go bad, if they had brought Roy in. Roy is a very astute person, he’s a smart guy. He would go and get a good coach to do the things that maybe he doesn’t think he’s the best at.”

“I think Roy is a true Sir Alex Ferguson manager. He manages people, he comes alive on match days. He’s not stupid enough to think, ‘I can do anything’. I just can’t imagine that those in power at that football club haven’t spoken to him in the last five years.”

“You search all over the world for the right person and the right person might be on your doorstep.”
