Burnley fans discuss Newcastle United and the 2-1 defeat.

An eventful match at St James’ Park.

Burnley fans watched as their team scored two goals and a man down in the first half.

Then a spirited defensive performance held off a Newcastle United side who failed to score any more goals after the break.

That was supplemented with an extra time goal, which meant a few minutes at the end for the home fans.

Burnley fans respond via their The Clarets on notice board:

‘Loved every minute in Newcastle, what a place.

Game over because of stupid goals and with 10 men it was game over, but if there was ever an example of this team being able to stay in the league it was this game.”

“I think Gordon is actually extremely smart before the broadcast incident. He wants to do one thing with the ball and then plays a pass that no one except Elanga was reading. I know it completely confused me live at the match and I immediately thought it was very clever. It completely misled our defense.”

‘There is a real naivete in many of the responses here. Newcastle played 2-0 against ten men and ran out. There is a match in Germany on Wednesday and their derby next weekend. They were clearly just trying to control the game.”

‘I saw a 93-year-old Burnley fan climbing a few rows to get to his seat in Newcastle yesterday.’

‘Broja was excellent and gave the Newcastle defenders a tough afternoon. Too bad that some of our support left during half time, a long journey of 45 minutes. I thought it was very sad that so many left at half time. I expected the worst…’

“We should have signed that.”

“Irrelevant, but I enjoyed watching Toneli tell everyone to think/be sensible when he came on and then immediately give away a soft/unnecessary foul on Walker.”

‘For the goals the penalty was justified, it hit his middle/upper arm which was in a strange position.

The corner (stupidly conceded by Ekdal without any pressure) was expertly tapped in, and if leaning into the goalkeeper is allowed, and it is, why have we had multiple upfield free kicks against us in recent games for leaning in? Inconsistency, but correct.’

‘Newcastle is one of those areas where we never do well. Turf Moor is another.’

‘Newcastle 2 – 0 Burnley brings back so many bad memories but there are still issues with that scoreline.’

“Don’t worry, it won’t stay that way for long.”

‘We played very well in the first half hour, we wanted to try. But we can’t help it, we have to do something crazy that we did to ourselves.’

‘Just a penalty on planet var – he misses the ball with both hands.’

‘I think you have to look back for a moment, how someone can say that he doesn’t play handball, that’s unbelievable.’

‘I don’t know why people blame the referee as if we were cheated. Talking about head in the sand and deflection.’

‘I have no problem with the penalty decision or the red card, but why didn’t Dubravka complain to the referee that Gordon ran into him for their first goal from the corner?’

‘It started well and better than I have seen us in previous games. The fluke from the corner with the red card throws the match out the window.’

‘People just come up with opinions based on the score line with 0 context. We did well early, had a lot of corners but couldn’t convert any and then, with Newcastle’s first corner, they put it straight into the net.

We then get a red card if it seemed unlikely that they would score and that’s game over. Handball is just salt in the wound.

How anyone looks at that and then says it’s the manager’s fault is beyond me.”

“Another defeat, but otherwise this was a fun watch.”

‘That was quite nervous towards the end, but we just managed to hold on for the defeat.’

‘You’re never going to win here – this is one of the places where you would never expect that.’

‘It’s a penalty but he definitely puts his arms up to defend himself against Voltemarde and the ball traps his arm

And I’ve rewatched the Dubravka/Gordon thing a few times, it’s nasty, plain and simple. Gordon is hindering him.’

‘Dubravka has some body, but his positioning and ball tracking were poor. He’s almost never the problem, but he made a mistake today. It happens.

The punishment must be given. Unless we say that only intentional handball is one thing.’

‘Our team may lack quality, but certainly not effort.’

‘I would say there was enough quality today too.’

Celebration in the dressing room of the Newcastle United team

‘As for the arguments that can have, should have, if, if, if.

My wife has a theory about this and thinks she is right, which is to always look at the goal difference being close to league position at the end of the season.

Our GD is only slightly behind Leeds, Forest and West Ham. So that suggests to me that we need to improve, but not hugely and have a chance.”

“Overall, I supported Parker. But other than the first five minutes and the last five minutes where we decided to try it, I’m really struggling to see what others see as positive about that.”

‘Newcastle players throwing themselves to the ground is equivalent to an automatic free-kick.’

‘After the referee on Wednesday evening we were back to one of the usual Premier League robots. Touch a Newcastle player (and even if he isn’t touched) he falls over… a free kick. We are pushed, pushed and fall over, it is the outstretched arms that say no again and again. They don’t like to be tackled by most top players. Always look for the fault, no matter what. The game is a shell of what it used to be.’

‘Can anyone explain why Ramsey was not sent off for the intentional handball? Attwell said it was “a denial of a promising attack” on the Tannoy. The shot is on target and has a chance of going in. Our ex-player Assignon did something similar against Bayern yesterday and was sent off.’

‘If he hadn’t done it, apparently it would have been an easy save for Ramsdale, so only a yellow card.’

‘I can’t prove it for sure, but I think Elanga, to prevent Pires from winning the ball from him, kicked the ball forward so hard that Dubravka would have been favorite to get to the ball first. It’s definitely a close call.”

‘I feel like we played well today, especially in the second half with ten men. It’s frustrating that we keep making stupid mistakes, but still have to score goals.’

‘Attackers got in each other’s way at the end with an open goal. Laurent misses his header!!’

‘If we played like that every week and put the ball there from corners, we would be good enough.’
