Title: Building and fitting statistical models with Stan and R: an introduction to Bayesian inference
Date: Thursday, November 13, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM CEST (Rome, Berlin, Paris time zone)
Speaker: Matteo Lisi is a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Department of Psychology at Royal Holloway, University of London. His research uses experimental methods and computational models to study how people represent and use information about uncertainty when making decisions. He teaches statistics and data analysis with a focus on making modeling concepts practical and transparent. Matteo is co-author of Statistics for Psychology Using R: A Linear Models Perspective (Open University Press / McGraw-Hill, 2025), an accessible, modern introduction to statistical modeling in R. Description: Bayesian modeling offers a powerful way to understand data, but it can be tricky to get started. This workshop provides a practical introduction to Bayesian inference using Stan and R, aimed at researchers willing to go beyond standard statistical packages.
We’ll start in familiar territory with generalized linear models and then work through a series of worked examples that show how Stan’s flexibility allows you to build and adapt models for more specialized applications. One of the main advantages of coding your models directly in Stan language is that it allows you to build the model you want, rather than being limited to a predefined set of options.
The aim of the session is to give you practical experience in specifying, fitting and interpreting Bayesian models in Stan, and to gain a clear idea of how to extend these methods to your own data. No prior experience with Bayesian analysis or Stan is required, although familiarity with R and regression modeling may be helpful.
Minimum registration fee: 20 euros (or 20 USD or 800 UAH)
Please note that registration confirmation will be sent to all registered participants 1 day before the workshop and not immediately after registration
How can I register?
- Save your donation receipt (after the donation has been processed, there is an option to enter your email address on the website to which the donation receipt is sent)
- Fill the registration formwhere you attach a screenshot of a donation receipt (attach the screenshot of the donation receipt emailed to you instead of the page you see after the donation).
If you are not interested in attending, you can also contribute by sponsoring a student’s participation, who can then participate for free. If you choose to sponsor a student, all proceeds also go directly to organizations working in Ukraine. You can sponsor a specific student or you can leave it up to us so that we can allocate the sponsored spot to students who have signed up for the waiting list.
