Bucks examine NBA at G League Showcase for roster upgrades ahead of trade deadline

The Milwaukee Bucks are actively exploring trades to improve their roster ahead of the Feb. 5 deadline, multiple teams confirmed to ESPN at the G-League showcase in Orlando. Milwaukee has lost three straight games and is three games out of the last play-in spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Bucks have one tradable first-round pick, in 2031 or 2032. They also have a 2026 second-round pick from Utah, though that selection is unlikely to move forward due to the protection of Nos. 31-55.

Milwaukee’s roster includes top-heavy salary obligations. Giannis Antetokounmpo, Myles Turner, Kyle Kuzma and Bobby Portis earn 77 percent of the team’s active salary.

Turner and Portis signed four- and three-year contracts, respectively, this offseason. Kuzma has two years left on his deal at $22.1 million and $20.3 million.

The Bucks are $19.5 million under the first apron and can take back salary in trades. Milwaukee carries $20.1 million in cash following the move of Damian Lillard last summer.

Milwaukee is 2-10 when Antetokounmpo has not played this season. The two-time MVP has missed an extended period of time due to a calf injury.

The Bucks are trying to stay within striking distance of the playoffs in Antetokounmpo’s absence. Their recent battle has intensified speculation about the direction of the franchise.

Milwaukee’s front office is canvassing the league for potential deals that could strengthen the roster. The limited restrictions on base capital and salary complicate the team’s ability to make significant moves.

The Bucks are under pressure to improve their position before the trade deadline. Their current position outside the play-in spots represents a disappointing start for a team with championship expectations.
