BU men’s hockey was crushed 4-0 at home by Providence

With a potential major winter storm looming, the Agganis Arena faithful went home hungry Saturday night — and so did the Boston University men’s hockey team.

At every Terriers home game, when BU scores a goal, fans get a free taco from El Jefe’s Taqueria. The Dog Pound often chants “WE WANT TACOS” in support of the Terriers.

But with BU’s 3-0 loss to Providence on Saturday, there won’t be any free tacos.

The Terriers’ fourth line provided a quality first shift that got BU off to a fast start, but the Friars took the lead just 2:03 into regulation on their first shot of the game.

Sophomore John Mustard took a lazy breakout pass from sophomore Sascha Boumedienne on the right half-wall, cut inside and gave No. 11 Providence (15-7-2, 10-3-1 Hockey East) a 1-0 lead.

Although the No. 18 Terriers (12-12-1, 8-9-1 HE) defeated the Friars 10-9 in the opening frame, BU’s offensive output was not particularly inspiring. Each side deserved a power play, but both were killed – Providence’s look was better for the man advantage.

Much of the second period was played through the neutral zone, with both teams battling for a real possession advantage.

Sophomore Aleksi Kivioja was called for a chop at 10:29 of the second period, giving BU its second look of the night on the power play. Freshmen Ryder Ritchie and Conrad Fondrk both had good looks on goal, but freshman Jack Parsons made the stop for the Friars.

At 1:04 p.m., Mustard was assessed game misconduct for contact to the head against sophomore netminder Mikhail Yegorov. After their five-minute power play, the Terriers couldn’t make any money.

After a goal entering the third period, BU started the frame with added urgency, stringing together quality shifts in the offensive zone. Sophomore Cole Hutson generated a few solid looks on goal, but was otherwise relatively quiet.

Freshman Julius Sumpf extended Providence’s lead at 10:34 of the third. Kivioja sent a relatively harmless shot on target that squirted through Yegorov, and Sumpf buried the rebound. That’s one Yegorov wants back.

Junior Tanner Adams scored a third for the visitors at 17:26.

In the second intermission interview, associate head coach Joe Pereira guaranteed a power-play goal after the Terriers went 0-for-3 in the first two periods. “We’re going to buy one,” he said. BU didn’t even have a chance in the final frame.

Adams found the back of the empty net with 18 seconds left to sweeten the cake for the Friars.
