The Hockey Team of Boston University defeated Long Island University 4-2 in the season opener on Saturday evening in Agganis Arena.
Here are three take-away restaurants of No. 2 BUs (1-0) victory over the sharks (0-1), plus how it happened.
Power Play Powerful and Fine Kill Solid
It took the terriers only four seconds of their first Power Play to score when a second-year assistant captain Cole Eiserman shot a one-timer from the right-hand circle home. At his fourth man’s advantage of the match, second-year attacker Sacha Boisvert scored. The terriers finished two of the five in the night. After cashing in 28.1 percent of his power, BU probably seems to be repeating that success this season.
Eiserman, Cole Hutson, Boisvert, Ryder Ritchie and Owen McLaughlin trotted as the best Power Play unit. Jack Murtagh, Brandon Svoboda, Sascha Boumedienne, Jack Harvey and Kamil Bednarik manned the second unit.
BU had to kill four penalties and looked solid, they all killed, but it was not perfect – it will never be. Svoboda, Boisvert, Boumedienne and Aiden Celebrini were the best fine-killing unit. Bednarik, Gavin McCarthy, Carter Amico and Jonathan Morello manned the second unit.
Scrappy and sloppy sixty minutes
The victory of the terriers was not without mistakes. Just like the beginning of last season, Bu de Puck coughed more often than it should have and was lucky that second -year goalkeeper Mikhail Yegorov had them on points on points.
Bodies flew on Saturday evening, because it was clear that both teams wanted to start their season. Whether it was scrums after whistles or one of the nine small penalties of the game, it was a physical match.
Mikhail Yegorov ready for a strong season
Yegorov was the best player of BU in the season opener and stopped 35 of 37 shots. With another young Terrier team that will certainly have growth pains, Yegorov will have to be a steady presence from play to play. If tonight was an indication, he is ready for the task.
How it happened:
Only four seconds in BU’s first Power Play, Eiserman shot a one-timer from the right circle at 5:51 of the first period. Hutson and Mclaughlin have picked up assists on the count.
The sharks first came on the board in the second period when senior captain Casey McDonald at home a rebound along Yegorov at 2:30 of the middle frame.
Boisvert picked up his first count as a terrier at 16:28 of the second on the Power Play. He stuck home a loose puck from Ritchie and McLaughlin.
Hutson expanded the BU lead to 3-1 at 7:11 of the third period. He woven his way around a defender and let go of a rapid wrestling of the left circle to beat second -year Daniel Duris.
After a turnover in the attacking zone, Sixten beat Jennersjö Yegorov glove side on an escape to lower BU’s lead to 3-2 at 13:38 of the third.
Eiserman extends the lead of the terriers to 4-2 at 15:27 of the third period after a loose puck in the fold.
