On Friday evening, hours before the Walker Cup 2025 on Cypress Point, the GB & I team received a motivating message from Rory McIlroy. In the minute video, McIlroy, who was a member of the last European Ryder Cup team to win on American Soil, noticed how special for the GB & I team is on the famous Monterey Peninsula track.
“If someone who played a Walker Cup and couldn’t get it done completely, and then play Ryder Cups and beat the Yanks in their own backyard, nothing feels better,” said McIlroy.
McIlroy then ended the message with a Ryder Cup promise prior to the 2025 event in Bethpage Black.
“Please defeat them because I know we are going to beat them on Bethpage,” said McIlroy.
The McIlroy’s message led GB & I to a session of 3-1 foursomes to open the Walker Cup. But Team USA received its own boost during the evening session in the form of an American Ryder Cup star: Bryson Dechambeau.
The double US Open Champion, which played in the Walker Cup team 2015, which lost 16.5 to 9.5, arrived on Saturday evening when the Americans fought to take the lead during the singles section of day 1. While the American Jase Summy Summy and GB & I’s Eliot Baker were on the Ropes and was under the ROPAUAU, DCAMBAMBEAU, DCAMBAMBEUAU was on the Ropesuau, Decchambeau Nathan and the rest of the team.
Dechambeau, who will have his Ryder Cup return in a few weeks, turned out to be happiness. Just when Deschambeau arrived, Baker missed his putter and Summy won the competition to give the Americans a critical point and they were able to take a lead in Sunday.
“That was pretty special,” Smith said that Dechambeau came to support the team. “I would say that my first thought is, I had not seen him for years and he has become a lot bigger.”
Deschambeau then hung around with the Americans in the dressing room before they give them a pep talk before the last day of Sunday.
“He just walked in,” said Preston Stout about Deschambeau. “That didn’t expect that at all. That was pretty cool. He gave us a little pep talk, which was pretty sweet. Hopefully this gives him a little motivation and will fire him for the Ryder Cup in a few weeks.”
While most of the conversation in the run -up to the Ryder Cup 2025 was aimed at the decision of the American captain Keegan Bradley not to choose himself as a play captain, the return of Dechambeau is a subdivided advantage that the US will have at Bethpage Black.
“A lot to say about Bryson,” said Bradley during the press conference of his Captain’s Pick. “One of the most incredible things is that he is qualified for this team of eight starts, which is unheard of. But what I am most impressed [by] Is the effort he made to be part of this team. He had to travel, do his utmost to meet us in our places, and he went beyond what we would ever ask of a player, and I am most proud of that. You can continue about what an incredible player he is and golfer, but what he has done for this team, which makes the extra effort, is great to see.
“The simple fact is that Bryson Dechambeau is one of the best golfers on planet Earth,” Bradley later said on Golf Channel. “We can link him to many boys. He has been very open – he will play with everyone. He is just rabidic to go out and represent his country at Bethpage Black. He is really a great weapon that we are going to have. Bryson has been absolutely incredible. Together and win the Ryder Cup.”
That weapon helped to stimulate the younger team USA on Saturday. Bradley suggests Deschambeau that an even greater impact has in three weeks, while the Americans try to spoil McIlroy’s vision to complete the “best year” of his career with a different victory on American soil.
