NAPA, CALIFORNIA – On Monday, just like you and practically everyone, JJ Spaun was back at the rut.
With shorts and a loose polo, he also looked at the mill every bit. On the left side of the 11th Green loaded in the Serene Boom, through the mountainous north track of Silverado Resort, he threw balls short, then long again and again. Besides some small chatter and the efforts of a few woodpeckers, the sound was small. Adam Schriber, his coach, looked nearby. After a while, partners David Lipsky, Rico Hoey and Chez Reavie stood to 12, but Spaun, your newest US Open winner, hung back, still hung.
A few meters away, next to Caddy Mark Carens, was the Spaun bag.

Welcome to the ProCore Championship, a PGA Tour September tournament that also does business as a de facto training camp for the US Ryder Cup team. When next Monday, the Americans will only be a week from the start of that biennial meeting with the Europeans at Bethpage Black. But they work this week.
Wait a minute.
A training camp? In Golf?
What do they do here?
And is Bryson Dechambeau, the only non-PGA Tour member of the US Ryder Cup team, that will appear?
Below are those questions. And more. With some answers.
Why does the US Ryder Cup team do this?
Two important reasons.
Prior to the last Ryder Cup, two years ago in Marco Simone in Italy, the Europeans crushed the Americans, 16.5-11.5 and all 12 euros played two weeks before the event, while only two Americans played in the two-week run-up.
Since then, American inactivity has been questioned, also by one of the members of that team. During last year’s ProCore, which was played two weeks before the Presidents Cup Team event, Wyndham Clark had this exchange with a reporter, with the request from the reporter in italics:

Last year there went to the Ryder Cup, there was a big gap in leisure time. Did you feel a bit unprepared and did that influence your decision to come and play this week?
“One hundred percent, that’s why I’m here,” said Clark. “Last year it was realistic four weeks, and when by the time you bound it to play, it was the fifth week, so it’s five weeks. I mean, I would never prepare for a big event where I had five weeks off between one tournament of the next. Sorry, I am not a tournament at the moment, I will come in.
“But I was sure that I had the feeling that many of us were not prepared for the Presidents Cup, it is less time, but I didn’t want to do that again. So if it is something that I do myself or hopefully team USA makes it mandatory that everyone does it, I think we have all played, I think we can play it all, I have.”
What did things look like two years ago?
Two years ago the ProCore Championship (which was then named the Fortinet Championship) was also played two weeks before the Ryder Cup. Americans Max Homa and Justin Thomas played it, and Homan went 3-1-1 on Marco Simone, and Thomas went 1-2-1, while the rest of the team won 6.5 points. (Brooks Koepka meanwhile played in a LIV Golf event the week before the Ryder Cup, and he went 1-1 on the Ryder Cup.)
On the European side, as noted, all 12 Europeans played two weeks before the Ryder Cup, the BMW PGA championship, in the event, near the DP World Tour head office.
What did it look like four years ago?
Four years ago, the Fortinet was played again two weeks before the Ryder Cup, held in Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, and played zero Americans. But one European did – Jon Rahm. And all except for three played the BMW.
And the Americans dominated the Ryder Cup, 19-9.
Does everyone play this week?

Largely.
For the Americans, Dephambeau and Xander Schauffele are missing. The reason for Schauffele is unclear, while Decchambeau plays his full-time golf with Liv-Golf, which means that he is no longer to play in PGA Tour events.
One player is out for Europeans. Sepp Straka and his wife recently welcomed a newborn in their families.
Will Bryson Dephambeau appear this week?
A bit, a person who is close to the situation, said Monday.
On Tuesday evening the American team will hold a dinner in a house nearby, and Deschambeau will be present. But from Monday he is not expected to be on the site of the ProCore.
Before this week, the American captain Keegan Bradley said that Decchambeau is constant in contact with him and the team. During last week’s Walker Cup, an amateur event that Dephambeau attended, he also offered a look at what Bradley told his team.
“Take your ego with you,” said Decchambeau in a video Shared by the USGA Social Media team. “Be who you know you are.”
Will Keegan Bradley play in the ProCore?
He is not, but is expected to talk to the media on the ProCore at 9 am local time on Wednesday at 9 am.
However, three of his vice captains – Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker and Gary Woodland – play.
Has Bradley played the two weeks before his two Ryder Cup performances in events? Once. In 2012 he played the week before, at the Tour Championship, but in 2014 he did not play for three weeks. (Three weeks before that event, He withdrew of the BMW championship because of a rules incident.)
So what do you get from a week?
Representatives the chance to refine.
And maybe a little more. Last week, at the Amgen Irish Open, the European team member Shane Lowry said this of playing at the BMW event:

āSo I think it works well for our Europeans, I think, because we can come to the environment that we are essentially playing for. I feel that if you are going to play the Ryder Cup, you play for much more than just the 12 boys there or the caddies or the people who are there, I feel that you play for the Tour. You play for a piece of the outside.
“So I feel like placing ourselves in that environment in the coming two weeks, it shows what it would mean for everyone. You are well desired by everyone. It is not only the Europeans on tour, it is the other boys, the kiwis or the South Africans. I think everyone has a need to win this Ryder -Beker.”
Can they view an example of potential Ryder Cup combinations this week?
Yes. And the release of the Procore Tee Times later this week must at least be expected. Will Ryder -Cuppers play together? Will they play with vice captains?
Regarding practice rounds, the 10 Americans are expected to play the front nine on Tuesday in the late morning, and they will all follow each other in the Wednesday Pro-Am. Those times are below:
7 hours, off tee no. 10: Scottie Scheffler
7:10: Justin Thomas
7:20: Gary Woodland
7:30 Webb Simpson
7:40 Harris English
7:50 Sam Burns
8: JJ Spaun
8:10: Ben Griffin
8:20: Brandt Snudeker
8:30: Cameron Young
8:40: Patrick Cantlay
8:50: Russell Henley
9: Collin Morikawa
What if they play badly?
A good question.
But one shot at the same time, right?
Do you focus more on this week – or the Ryder Cup in two weeks?
Let’s go back to Lowry about that.
“We are always preparing for big tournaments,” he said last week, “and you always have larger goals ahead of you. But I think that once you go back to the small task you have and the small goals you have – not small. I am not saying that the Irish open is small. I would like to win the Irish open.

āI think the big goal in the following month is to win the Ryder Cup. I think you are bringing it back to your day today as a sportsman, and that is what you do. Even like this afternoon, what do I do to recover as good as I can, of course in mind and the rest of the week, but I also have the Ryder Cup in mind and the larger goals in mind.
“Yes, you just look at that, but you take it day after day. That’s how we live our lives.”
Who needs more this week than anyone?
We go with the four newcomers – Spaun, Henley, Griffin and Young – and Morikawa. The reason for the rookies is clear because they fight against understandable nerves.
For Morikawa he is one of the best ball strikers in Golf and should be an American anchor, but he has not won since 2023.
Are there a US Ryder Cup team snubs in the ProCore field?
Yes.
Maverick McNealy is here. A Sunday last combination with one of the Ryder -Cuppers would certainly be interesting.
What about the players here?
If this had not been a Ryder Cup year, the ProCore -presence of the 10 Ryder -Cuppers would probably not have happened. But with them in the field, 10 tour professionals are out.
You can still see how they feel.
What about the tournament itself?
With one of the best fields in recent memory, tournament organizers are to be as happy as the tournament winner himself.
The name of the ProCore also comes out. Just as it is in the previous sentence.
