It’s not often that an experienced professional golfer makes seven bogeys in the final round to win a tournament. But that’s exactly what LIV Golf pro Marc Leishman did on Sunday.
However, nerves were not the cause of Leishman’s struggles on Sunday at the 2025 Victorian PGA Championship. Instead, the brutal conditions were caused by high winds that pushed up the scores.
Here’s what you need to know.
Marc Leishman battles strong winds to triumph at the Victorian PGA
Leishman, 42, has been playing on the world’s top golf tours for decades. A six-time PGA Tour winner, he joined LIV Golf in 2022, and his winning ways continued. He earned his first LIV Golf win this year at the 2025 LIV Miami event in April.
In the last seventeen years, none of these victories have taken place in his home country of Australia. But Leishman changed that in a big way on Sunday by winning the main event in his home region of Victoria.
Pursuing a home win was anything but easy.
The Victorian PGA Championship, a PGA Tour of Australasia event, was held this year on the Open Course at Moonah Links. And on Sunday, strong winds terrorized the competitors.
The wind was so fierce that of the 53 players who made the cut, none broke 70 in the final round.
Leishman’s own score on Sunday did not resemble that of a winner. Bogeys on 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15 and 16 put seven squares on his scorecard.
But birdies on 4 and 11 kept him in the running. His main competitor, 54-hole leader Josh Younger, also suffered from the strong wind on Sunday. When they arrived at the par-5 18th hole, they were tied at four under.
Coming off three consecutive bogeys, Younger could only make par on the final hole. However, Leishman completed a nifty up-and-down for birdie to win by one shot, his pants and shirt billowing in the wind as he stood over his final putt. His final score? A four-over 76.
“It was a brutally tough day. I knew it was going to be like this… you hope you can shoot better than that,” Leishman said of the difficult weather conditions in the final round.
He continued: “Obviously on days like this you know everyone is going to have bogeys and unfortunately I had a few early but fought back and managed the last birdie which was nice.”
In the end, it didn’t matter how high Leishman’s score was on Sunday. All that mattered was that his total score was one lower than anyone else’s.
“I’m very happy with a win,” he said after his win. “I’ve been playing well lately… well, all year actually. I’ve been hitting the ball really well over the last three weeks in Australia and haven’t been able to show much in terms of results, but it’s nice to walk away with a win here.”
