Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has surpassed club icon David Beckham in an eye-catching chart-topper following his impressive display against Crystal Palace last weekend.

Fernandes masterclass

Fernandes pulled off a heroic move to guide United to a stunning 2-1 comeback win over Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

Palace took a shock lead inside five minutes through Maxence Lacroix and threatened to spoil the feel-good factor at United since Michael Carrick was appointed interim head coach.

However, United steadily grew into the match and the momentum changed dramatically when Matheus Cunha gifted his side a penalty after receiving a stupid pass from Fernandes. Lacroix also received his marching orders to take down Cunha within the danger zone.

Fernandes stepped up to take the penalty and he made no mistake, sending Dean Henderson the wrong way. The Portuguese playmaker was in action moments later and this time delivered an excellent ball to Benjamin Sesko, whose thundering header made it 2-1.

The result moved United into third place in the Premier League with 51 points. The Red Devils are currently thirteen points behind table leaders Arsenal and eight points behind second-place Manchester City.

Once again Fernandes was the heartbeat of the team. He pulled the strings to drag his side out of the jaws of defeat, as he has done so many times since arriving from Sporting CP in 2020.

His goal and assist against Oliver Glasner’s men also mean he has overtaken Beckham in a milestone club rankings.

Fernandes overtakes Beckham

According to statisticians Opta, Fernandes has scored and assisted in 18 different Premier League games for United.

He passes Beckham, who achieved this feat seventeen times.

Currently, Fernandes only follows Wayne Rooney (35) and Ryan Giggs (22).

Fernandes is the first United player to provide more than 13 assists in a Premier League season since Antonio Valencia in the 2011/2012 season.

Fernandes is in elite company and if his stay at the club continues, there is every reason to believe he will want to overtake Rooney and Giggs.
