Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has sent a strong warning to his teammates following the team’s victory against Liverpool.
United edge Liverpool
Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire scored in both halves to give United a first win at Anfield since 2016.
Liverpool’s only goal was scored by Cody Gakpo, who had twice hit the post before finally getting on the scoresheet to restore parity.
Fernandes played a key role in both strikes. He initiated the move for the opener, passing the ball to Amad, who then found Mbeumo’s point.
The captain also delivered a sublime ball that Maguire was more than happy to head home to seal the three points for United.
Despite the celebrations following what Ruben Amorim hailed as his biggest win since taking charge of the club, Fernandes stressed the importance of maintaining momentum, starting with next weekend’s match against Brentford.
He warned that with less criticism, criticism of him and his teammates would return.
Fernandes gives a warning
Fernandes told DAZN Portugal [as quoted by O Jogo]”It was a very important match. We obviously needed this win to get closer to the top positions. It was very important to win against a team that had to win, and we also used that impatience to make them make some mistakes.”
“We were very effective in the first half and then dropped a bit in the second half, but we were resilient, we knew how to tackle it and in the end we scored the second goal.”
When asked what he told his teammates in the dressing room, Fernandes explained: “Today is to celebrate and enjoy the moment. I will start thinking about it.” [the next game] tomorrow, because the focus must quickly shift from today to next week.”
“Winning today is very nice, but if we don’t win next week it will be a dark cloud again. It’s difficult to keep nice skies in Manchester.”
On whether the first half at Anfield was the best in recent history, he explained: “We were very aggressive, we started playing from there and we knew they were pushing a lot of players forward, but then they left a lot of space open and we were effective on the counter-attacks, with very fast players.”
“We are very happy.”
United are in ninth place and two points behind the Champions League places.
