Bruins Get Zacha Back at the Perfect Time – The Hockey Writers Boston Bruins Latest news, analysis and more

The Boston Bruins will get a boost when they return to action after the Olympic break. Pavel Zacha, who suffered an upper body injury (which was later turned out to be a concussion) on Jan. 29 against the Philadelphia Flyers, was a full participant in the Bruins’ practice on Saturday after the veteran forward previously wore a red non-contact jersey all week.

Zacha has consistently been one of the Bruins’ most important players since joining the club via trade in 2022 and any extended absence would have been a major hit to the team. Head coach Marco Sturm spoke during the training about how important Zacha is to the team.

“Very important,” Sturm said of Zacha’s importance to his line. “How they’ve been our shutdown line, but also producing offensively. You can see it without it.” [Zacha] in the line-up; we missed a little bit of faceoffs, power play. There’s a lot of different areas where we missed him a little bit. That’s why it’s so nice to have him there fresh and healthy.”

With 15 goals and 37 points in 54 games so far this season, Zacha has already surpassed his goal production from a season ago and is well on his way to beating his point production. Whether playing on the wing or in the middle, and regardless of his linemates, Zacha has worked his way into the team’s new core.

Although the Bruins dodged a bullet with Zacha’s injury, the 28-year-old’s ailment was not without consequences.

Zacha will miss the 2026 Olympics

The injury timeline meant Zacha was forced to miss the 2026 Olympics in Italy, where he would have represented the Czech Republic alongside David Pastrnak.

For Zacha, this would have been his first opportunity to represent his country at Olympic level.

“That was one of the most frustrating things, especially when it’s something you were looking forward to. It was really hard,” Zachah said after training on Wednesday. “It’s hard to watch the games knowing I can’t be there to experience it.”

It’s clear why Zacha would be upset if he missed out on this opportunity, but he’s seemingly managed to seize this opportunity and maintain a positive attitude about what it means for the Bruins’ season.

“On the other hand, it was good that I had some time to come back,” noted the Czech forward. “For our season it will be good for me to have some rest.”

It is often said that the name on the front of the shirt means more than the name on the back. To some extent, it’s easy to put things into context and realize that any player who believes in the bigger picture is better for the team. At the same time, these players are also human beings, and they will undoubtedly sometimes have more feelings about how things affect them than the team.

Even though Zacha knows the time off he’s getting is a good thing for the team, it won’t immediately erase the feeling that he’s been robbed of the opportunity to represent his country. What’s done is done and he’ll have to move on eventually, but when you remember that players are people first, being empathetic to their situation can go a long way.

When the Bruins return to action on February 26, Zacha will almost certainly be in the lineup. This is great news for everyone involved. With the Bruins currently occupying the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference and just three points out of second place in the Atlantic Division, every game will be crucial going forward.
