When Osso Architecture tackled the renovation of a two-story carriage house and transformed its 1,000 square feet into a two-bedroom, 2.5-bath home, the work caught the attention of local residents. “People loved that carriage house and wanted to make sure a tower didn’t go up,” says architect Margot Otten, co-founder of the Brooklyn- and Hoboken-based firm Douglas Segulja.

Dozens of debates if the apartment tower would diminish the landmark Fort Greene Church
During a heated, 3.5-hour hearing, nearly 80 speakers questioned whether the Landmarks Preservation Commission should allow a developer to build a 27-story, 240-unit tower using Fort Greene’s landmark Hanson Place Central United Methodist Church as its base.
Forty-six speakers supported the plans for the church at 144 St. Felix Street, on the corner of Hanson Place, largely citing the need for new housing – and many said the design was respectful of the church, the neighboring Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower and the BAM Historic District. But 33 opponents argued that the project was completely excessive in size, would obstruct the view of the iconic bell tower, undermine the church’s history and architecture and amount to ‘facadism’.
